New FSSWOSA Website: friends.web-intouch.com (no www!)

We are in the process of rolling out our new website. It is still in its infancy and we hope that you will bear with us while we sort out any problems that may arise while we populate pages, and for the moment some pages are still on the old site.

The aim is for our new website to be more interactive and it is linked to our Old Scholars’ database. Once logged in you will be able to view additional pages and update your profile and contact details, find friends and leave messages.

If you have not already received your login details please register using the box on the top right of the new website home page. Please be patient as Stefanie Godfrey is only in one day a week during term time and she will be the one to email you with your login details. If you are able to give us some feedback about the new site then please email Stefanie at oldscholars@friends.org.uk

Much information will still be available to all including news items, details of forthcoming events, archive documents and photos, and electronic versions of publications.

We would like to express our thanks to Tom Robinson who designed this original website and got us heading in the right direction before most schools had got websites. It is our intention that our web address www.oldscholars.com will soon link to our new website.

Jean Stubbs. I have just heard the sad news that Jean Stubbs died in her nursing home in Saffron Walden on 11th March 2014 at the age of 95. Those who knew her here as a teacher will not have forgotten her dedication to her pupils, the high standard she set herself in her teaching of French and Latin, and her love for this school. She was a pupil here from 1928 to 1936 and then returned to Friends' as a teacher from 1956 to 1981. Her mother Margaret Stubbs was the housekeeper/matron of our first Junior School when it was in Croydon House from 1930 to 1948. Jean edited a chapter on the Junior School in our Tercentenary book "The School on the Hill" in 2000. She was actively involved with the Old Scholars and corresponded with overseas Old Scholars for many years. Those who went on sixth form workcamps to La Coume, the little school in the French Pyrenees of Quaker origin, will be interested to know that Jean translated the history of La Coume from French into English in 1997. It was Jean who organised the fund raising for the purchase of the school's first minibus. Those who would like to share further memories of Jean might like to email them to me at mjh@friends.org.uk.
The funeral will be on Thursday 20th March 10.00 am at Cambridge Crematorium (East Chapel) and the Memorial Meeting for Jean will take place at 12.30 pm on the same day at the Meeting House in Saffron Walden, followed by refreshments. Martin Hugall

We have recently heard of the deaths of John Dudderidge YG 1955 and also of Rita Welch who was a matron at Friends' from 1981 to 1997. We received the following information about John: "John Dudderidge, who was a pupil at the school in the late 1940s and 1950s, has died aged 76. A birthright Quaker (his parents were John and Evelyn Dudderidge, originally of Hampstead Meeting and later of St Albans, Burford, and finally Cambridge Oast House), he later became an evangelical Christian in the Church of England. He lived for the last 40 years or so in Luton, working for Smith Kline French, before retiring at the age of about 50 due to ill health. John’s great passion was music – from Bach to modern jazz – and modern languages: he mastered a wide range of European languages, which he used to good effect in his work as a Scientific Information Officer, translating scientific papers and making research available to scientists at Smith Kline. He was also very involved with music at his church, as a performer and composer.... John never married or had children, but he was a much loved uncle, and mentor to the children of several friends. His funeral was at St Hugh’s Church in Luton on 3 February 2014."

Dear Old Scholars It was good to see that so many of you were able to attend reunion events at the recent Friends and Families Day on 11th May and some were also able to be with us at the enjoyable dinner in the evening. However, we would love to hear more from you! Please do get in touch if you have any little anecdotes or photos of your time at Friends’ or any news of what you have been up to, that we could include in the next edition of the Old Scholars’ Magazine, which should go to the printers in July. It would be great if you could email them to oldscholars@friends.org.uk before then, or post them to The Old Scholars, Friends’ School, Saffron Walden, CB11 3EB. Alan Wright died peacefully with Jane, Chris, Will and Cate round him on Sunday 8th July. He had earlier dictated this message for you all: I want you all to know how much I have valued the contributions you have made to my life, frequent or infrequent, large or small. I know that I would have been a much poorer person without your input. This brings you love and best wishes for the rest of your lives. Alan You will all be welcome to attend the Memorial Service to remember and celebrate the life of Alan Morley Wright. This will be held at Swaffham Parish Church on Friday September 21st at 11:00 with refreshments afterwards at The George Hotel. At the service there will be a collection for Cancer Care and Treatment Fund at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn and the Swaffham and Litcham Home Hospice. To assist with numbers for catering, it would be useful if you were able to let Jane know whether you think you will be able to join them. (wrightredlion@hotmail.com)

Do any of you remember Hans Frei? He was a refugee from Germany at Walden during 1935 to 38 or 39. It's a long shot but if any one can comment on him during that time I shall be interested. He joined his parents in US after leaving Walden and at first studied textile engineering at North Carolina. I corresponded with him for a time while he was there but then lost touch. Later he became a distinguished theologian at Yale. He died in 1988.

Very sad news of the untimely death of Steve Timpson; drummer with The Nomads and The Lost Souls, the first school rock bands in the early and mid sixties. As I have previously mentioned, 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the birth of The Nomads, to be marked by an article in the forthcoming OSA Annual Report. Although we subsequently lost touch, I counted him as a good friend and fellow musician in those early days. For those interested Steve features extensively in my full account of those heady early sixties with The Nomads, now on the OSA website. Paul

I have had to add a password to access parts of the site and asked Gus to check it for me. In doing this he saw Paul's message about Iceland. (The user name and password are the same as you would have used to access this message board.) Co-incidently the same weekend I was looking at some old family postcards one of which refered to a geography field trip to Norway being changed to a trip to Waterford in 1969. A trip with enduring memories. I hope to see as many of the 1970 year group as possible this May. Please let me know if you can make it. Steve

Iceland Expedition 1972. If you were on it, and there were 14 of you from the Vth and VIth Form, then I would like to meet you in 2012 some 40 years on. Unfortunately the memory is not what it was so the names that come to mind are Geoff Barnard,(who must be an important geographer these days) Guy Busher, now I hope Dr. Busher (whose mum sent me a message delivered to me on the plane as it was about to take off which said simply "Guy Busher is allergic to horse serum"). There were identical boy twins from N.Norfolk one of whom was called Chris Sparke !There were one or two girls but I would like the list which appeared in the Avenue in 1972 together with a centrefold depicting the 72 mile walked route. I have a very poor photocopy on which I cannot read the writing. Having just retired as Chair of another Quaker School Board I have been clearing out my office and found to my delight a Super 8mm film of the Expedition that alas I can no longer project (no projector). Can it be disced and a sound track added ? So how about a reunion 1. In Iceland 2. In Saffron Walden? 3. In Newbury where I live/ or in Brittany where I have a farmhouse. Now in my 70th year the age difference between us doesn't seem that great as most of you will be nearly 60 ! In Friendship, Paul High

After the success of our 50th birthday reunion, I am hoping that a number of us will repeat the experience as waiting until we are 60 is just way too long. Let me know your views. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Paul, How right you and Grumpy (?) John are. People like me have failed to use the message board for quite some time now( me at least 2 years). Pity that Brian's slipped from view, a nice feller at school and as we know, a madcap Chelsea fan and of course he was a clone of Hank Marvin (of the Shadows). Interesting news re The Nomads - could be an opportunity to draw some of us old'uns back to FSSW to listen to you. Last time I heard the dulcet tones of PPS and Tom Robinson must be ten years at least and PPS could still belt it out with Stevie drumming away .... memories of times and friends past. What drew me back was viewing Matthew Robinson's 1963 8mm film. Trust you are all well - have just celebrated my 65th and another life starts, looking after my grand-daughter !

Paul in reply to your query about Brian (AKA Fats Harris), he was in my year and I remember well that he lived in Chelsea and was a dead keen Chelsea supporter when Chelsea was a lowly 2nd division club. I haven't heard about him since we left school and I know that reunion organisers for our year have also had no luck trying to trace him so that really isn't much help, is it ? Good to know someone else has the same feelings about Twitterbook or whatever it is called !

Nine messages in more than a year!! Shame to see a good system not being used, but I guess I'm a typical offender who looks and leaves without communicating. Maybe, as Grumpy John from Oz said last year, Twitter and Facebook have taken over, but as a deliberate non-user of these insidious systems, I must be out of touch. But I have a positive role for the message board - October 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of the birth of the school's first rock band - The Nomads (for those of you who can recall those distant and heady days.)Bassist Richard Jones prodded me wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of lead guitarist Brian Simmonds? Someone in his 1966 year group may have some knowledge - if so, let me know. Maybe we can organise a virtual gig!

Dear Old Scholars, I am writing to invite you to attend the annual reunion at School, which this year is on Saturday 14th May. As in previous years this coincides with the School’s Friends and Families Day, and is an excellent opportunity to see the School in action. It will also be the last time you will be able to see the School before the redevelopment. Already trees are being cleared to make way for the new Junior School. You are most welcome to come along at any time during the day and the programme of activities is attached. Our main meeting point will be the Library, so please remember to sign in. The school day finishes at around 4pm. There will be tea on the front lawn from this time until the drinks reception at 6pm. We have a delicious menu for the reunion dinner, created by the School’s award winning Burmese chef, Bobby Nanda. Please apply early as places are strictly limited. Click here for more details. My project, researching the lives of old scholars, is progressing well and I am hoping to have some displays ready for the reunion. Thank you to all who have contacted me so far. It’s not too late to nominate, but please be aware of my new email address, jules.foster@hotmail.co.uk, (the previous one was hijacked and is no longer in use). Alternatively I can be contacted via the School. I very much hope to see you at School on the 14th. Regards, Julie Foster President 2010 to 2011

The Year Groups being specially encouraged to come back are those who took (or would have taken their A Levels) in 1969 and 1979. As well as the usual events around the School, there will once again be a delicious dinner on Saturday evening. It's a special occasion for this year's President, Julie Foster, who is encouraging OS from her year group (1978) to come back. Richard Gilpin

We are very sorry to hear that, H. Arthur Farrand Radley M.B.E. (YG 1933), died peacefully, after a short illness, on Saturday 16th October 2010, aged 94. His funeral service has been arranged for Thursday 4 November at 1 p.m. at West London Crematorium and it will be a service in the manner of the Quakers. No flowers please. Donations to the Religious Society of Friends. Enquiries to HAVEN Funeral Services, tel. 020 8993 8040. Farrand was a pupil here from 1927 to 1933 and was in the first Sixth Form at Friends’ to take Higher School Certificate. Farrand’s family have had a long association with the school over many generations and his mother also taught music at Friends’ ( The main music room is dedicated to Helen Radley). Farrand served on the Old Scholars’ Committee for many years and was President from 1966 to 67. With a camera never far from him, Farrand contributed many photographs of OS reunions to the Old Scholars’ Magazine over the years. Those who have had the privilege to work alongside Farrand on the OS Committee will know that he was a mine of historical information about the school. Farrand wrote the first chapter in our tricentenary book “The School on the Hill”, entitled “A Four-Site Saga” outlining the history of the School at its four sites – Clerkenwell, Islington, Croydon and Saffron Walden. This book can be downloaded from our website at http://www.friends.org.uk/school/history/book/index.htm Farrand was an amazing and most likeable character and absolutely passionate about the School. He has contributed much to the School and the Old Scholars’ Association. Farrand will be sadly missed by his wife Laura, family, many friends, the School and the Old Scholars’ Association.

In order to give the Committee the authority to make these changes, we need members to attend, listen, ask questions and, hopefully, agree the way forward. Bring back quill pen and parchment I say. Even before that high tech advance, what was wrong with the message stick ? The boys over here used it for thousands of years and it never crashed, never was hacked into to steal your PIN numbers and was the ultimate green machine that you could use to poke your fire in your cave once it had been read. Progress ?? My ar-- ! Guess what my favourite TV program is ? 'Grumpy Old Men' of course, what else ?? John

The Year Groups being specially encouraged to come back are those who took (or would have taken their A Levels) in 1968 and 1978. As well as the usual events around the School, there's a posh dinner in the Library at the end of the afternoon. Just think about it: food, wine, chitchat, and no-one going all serious and whispering "shoosh" at you. 68s and 78s you know who you are, so get in touch with each other, get organised, and be there on the 15th. It's also special for my Year Group (1960) because our current President, Lesley Jacob, was one of us who left in 1960. She is really keen for lots of OS from our year to come back. I succeeded in getting a whole crowd of 1960s back for the reunion in 1985 (25 years on) and it's now 50 years on, so go on - make the effort. It'll be great to see you all.

I'm putting the 2010 OS Magazine together at the moment, and would really appreciate it if OS could please get their fingers to work on their keyboards, and give me news and views. It doesn't matter whether or not you are a member of the Association: what matters is that you are an OS with something to tell me (and the readers of the Magazine). I can't make up all of it - something has to come from you! Please.....

Luke, funnily enough I did the same with a co-conspiritor 28 years later. We also pledged to get on the roof of every building which we succeeded in doing - except the water tower. Most exploits we managed without props, but to get on top of one building we needed a ladder. I think it was Edward Dodge who caught us with it - somehow we blagged our way past. The worst time was in the vents underneath the swimming pool. I was in front, it was blisteringly hot and the tunnel got narrower and darker. Cue claustrophobia and a rapid exit arse first. Aah. A level revision was great, wasn't it?

We did a good job of getting ourselves together at 50 ( with a lot of help from Tom) - we could do something different or go somewhere different. This message is for those who would remember my younger brother Teddy, and who have not yet heard of his death on 19 June 2009 in Ottawa. Ted died just 6 days after his 71st birthday following an operation for the partial removal of a Stage IV brain tumour in April 2008. The prognosis was never good, although we were all hoping for a miracle and that he could somehow survive - in fact, due largely to his courage and strong will, as well as to intensive treatment with radiation and chemotherapy he lived longer than we were told to expect. His family in Canada, my brother Peter, sister Jenny and I are still finding it hard to come to terms with his loss. I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers him.
