To all in the class of '71, I would love to hear from anyone in my year group (1971) and hope that everyone attending the reunion this weekend has a great time. I only received details about it today and would love to have been there.....a bit difficult as I am currently working in Singapore. Instead, I have just spent a nostalgic hour scrolling through the Old Scholars Web site! It really brought back the memories to see photos of people like Maggie Appleton, Tanya Fox, Gordon Langford, Mike Kyrkos and others......and just to see the names of others whom I remember so well. I certainly recognised Sue Fellowes and Chris Barber on the message board. I should love to get in touch with Ally Purkiss and Carola Pitcher if anyone has a contact address or email for them. I have just spent the last 3 years teaching in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and am now in Singapore, but my folks still live in Saffron Walden. My mother taught at the school for about 8 years and my brother, Simon, was in the class of 1974. He is married with 3 children and lives in Bishops Stortford. Have a great weekend....

Tom, I just read your message prior to leaving for FSSW ... I can understand some of your frustration but methinks it best to stay and promote your beliefs from within. Maybe some of the non repliers did not get the e mail? Meanwhile my thanks which I am sure is echoed by hundres of us FSSWOS for all you have done for the excellent OSA site. Best regards Cynthia aka Fuzz

Dear Simon Colbeck - I share your amazement. The link from this site to today's Peace March was originally placed there by myself. Two committee members objected to it. I then emailed all 20 of the committee, including the school itself, to ask whether people were for or against the link. The response, or rather the lack of it, has dumbfounded me. Only one fellow member replied in favour. Several were vehemently against any connection between this web site and a "political" event like the Peace March - one of them on the grounds that it might adversely affect membership numbers. Others were 'reluctantly' against, and the remaining dozen didn't reply at all. I've enthusiastically promoted Friends School - and its Old Scholars' Association by running its database and this web site. Partly I did this for reasons of personal reconciliation. But also in the belief that 300 years of Quaker education has been a proactive force for good in the world and worth celebrating. I will be on the Peace March this weekend, but I will not be going to Saffron Walden. It's clear that there are more pressing, and humanly useful, ways of spending my remaining days than devoting any more of them to the Friends School Saffron Walden Old Scholars Association, and I resign my membership herewith.

I am amazed that any-one, let alone a committee member, should object to a link from this site to a site promoting an anti war march. The clash of these two events obviously poses a dilemma for anyone on whom a Quaker education made some impression. How does the creation of a link compromise the objectives of the OSA in any way? I am more disturbed by the implication that people running the OSA are sufficiently enthusiastic or complacent about an imminent attack on Iraq to demand the link be removed. I trust (hope) there is some other explanation.

I'm sorry to see that the committee are unable to allow a link, http://www.stopwar.org.uk/, to an event that so many Old Scholars will be, or want to be, a part of. I find it hard to think one of the principles of my FS education should be dismissed so readily. I shall be at the reunion but now regretting more than ever that I couldn't include the march in my plans.

This will be too late, I know. I will not there this weekend. Not because I don't want to be, but just because I've been to apathetic to get round to organising myself to get there. Or to put it another way, my present life has more importance than my past life. I think I COULD have come, but my time constraints here mean I SHOULD NOT come. So, as a weak apology for absence, from someone that most of you don't know anyway: I wish all OS all the very best in all their endevours, and a special hello, and thank you, to those with whom I shared the experience of SW. I did enjoy my school days, and will continue to treasure the memories which are rekindled by the odd comment on this message board. Have a Great Weekend everybody.

Well I'm not across all 61ers who will be there..but having just looked at the responses I've had over the last few weeks ... those who said they would or probably might... Robin Lamb, John Welton, Owen Wells, Tony Weatherhead, Procter Hutchinson, John Ashby, Jonathan Hartstone, David Hills and Andrew Moss... then Pauline Seers and Anne Hirst...would have liked so much far more names there... As for those I've failed to include but told me, well mea culpa... and fatigue... Those that would have much wanted to come but can't .... distance as as far as NZ... Liz Timpson, David Balchin, David Wicks, Margaret Beckhelling... and again those I fail to name... The real shame tho is that so many others seem to have vanished... for me Nobby (Noel) Clark... anyone have any steer on him? But no doubt bits of info will emerge over the weekend... enough... as any non 61 would more than say...

It's good to see that Quaker values still exist. Do we have a meeting place for the Old Scholars contingent? I may not be able to join it as I have commitments to children, colleagues etc but I shall be wearing a black tabard with 'Not in My Name' and 'Don't attack Iraq' in dayglow orange. There is a Quaker vigil on the steps of St Martin in the Fields at 12.30 which I hope to get too, but the bus from Birmingham may have other ideas.

The link to the Stop the War website is worth a look. Even a died-in-the-wool non-participant might be tempted by the idea that the re-union could usefully start there. Imagine the flavour of the demo as a tasty little retro hors d'oeuvre to whet the appetite...could leave before the end of speeches which promise to be interminable... Though I would be quick to accept that even the merest threat of a Joynes dead-leg would certainly be a highly effective deterrent against Saddam, and would save us all an awful lot of trouble.

However, it is good to be in touch after all these years. Life has been moderately kind to me and not without some great adventures along the way !! FS was a great grounding for life and I have some wonderful memories .....and before anyone from the school management jumps in to reply, I do appreciate that you may well not reciprocate the same sentiments where my education was concerned ......but at least the school is still standing :-) You have done a great job with this site and I am certain it is appreciated by many, even if they don't post on it !!! I think the suggestion of joining the march is commendable but it seems to me there is another way. I think a small group of highly experienced, viscous thugs dropped into Baghdad could have this wrapped up in 24 hours. Might I suggest Dave Pavitt, Roger Walkey, Paul Drawmer, Gavin Brown, Jim Wallace,Paul Headily, Jeremy West and I could be the foundation of a pretty effective group. Of course we need an air campaign to soften things up so I suggest Brian Simmons be dropped from 25,000 feet. That should take out all the scuds and scare the Imperial Guard shitless.Vulunteers welcome.

Glad to see there will be a group from, or representing, Walden at the march on Saturday. I'll be there with a group from Norwich, and I'll return there in the afternoon, but I'll look out for you. Does anyone else remember DP raising his arm and shouting "Heil Hitler!" as he listened to one of his speeches. Do any of the current teachers follow DP's example, contemptuously and sarcasticly shouting "Hail to the Chief!" or should I say "Hail Bush!"? Apart from that I still have reservations about DP, one of them being that his French lessons were so boring. On Sunday I'll let the train take me and the strain to Walden -see you then.

Always one to give praise where it is due and without wishing to sound as though I have been paid to say it, I have just received my copy of School on the Hill, and it is a very fine book indeed. It is beautifully produced with lovely brown photos, varied text in lay out and content and really is an easy and interesting read. It ought to spark off a volume two ! Anyway, this is really a prompt to anyone who hasnt heard of it or thought of buying one to do so now ! It would do justice to any good coffee table! Seriously, well done to Hilary and all those others who made contributions. Looking forward to the weekend. Cheers Jan

Greetings to "Anti War" - thanks for your helpful exhortations to us to be on the march on Saturday. However you forgot to add your name, contact details and to suggest a meeting place where we can meet up with you there. That would have been perhaps even more helpful to those of us from Friends School who oppose the war and wish to march together in solidarity. Give me 24 hours to check with the demo organisers, train companies and other Old Scholars who've already said they're coming on the march - and I'll put up a special web page to suggest a rendezvous point and travel times to Walden afterwards. Departure point is currently 12.30pm from Embankment, but may change again. The FSSW Reunion has been two years in the planning, so obviously a number of people may have made arrangements that are near-impossible to change now at the last minute. Especially those with children or who are travelling long distances. But anyone who subscribes to the Quaker values of nonviolence and pacifism can still help the anti-war effort with petitions, donations, letter-writing etc. via the link on the front page of this site.

Loveday Giles - yes, my parents were the wardens of the Maldon YH, which is no more. Flattened to make way for some developement or other - not even a plaque on the wall!! Yes I had a younger sister Ruth (1 year below me). She is at FSSW on the Saturday - travelling up with her friend from the same year - Gill King. I also had a much younger sister Alison - about five years below me - I've forgotten and cant be fussed to work it out. She only stayed 4 terms, didn't like the place and will not be coming. Hello Anne Hirst (as was). I know that John Welton will be there, I think that "Mitch" Mitchell anounced his intention in an earlier message. I have been told that Owen Wells will be there. Luke Albarin will be there of course. I shall be looking in on the Saturday. It is rumoured that Danny Hills will be there (I hope so Danny). That's all I know. Robin Lamb

What is the phrase? What goes around comes around? All this talk of antiwar rallies makes me wonder if I haven't slipped through some time wrinkle back to my adolescence. I left Saffron Walden in 1967 (following "O" levels) to return with my family to the US. Upon getting back to the states brother John & I found ourselves swept up in the antiwar struggle of the late 60's. Somehow our local Washington DC draft board didn't figure my being raised in a Quaker household, attending the Washington's Florida Avenue Friend's Meeting (The one Richard Nixon felt rejected by) and attending five years of Friend's secondary schools qualified me as a pacifist. John must have gotten a pass from Cyril Mummery. They believed him and let him spent four years performing alternative service at a Psychiatric Hospital. He worked very hard for four years. I ended up not being drafted by virtue of a most un-Quaker process, the draft Lottery. I hope to see many old friends and to renew many old acquaintances next weekend. I should arrive Friday and am staying in the area through Tuesday. I cannot wait to get there.

Rachael - see you at the Stop The War demo at Hyde Park at 1pm this Saturday (28th). If anyone who's going and would like to meet up as a group there to form an OSA contingent, then head up to Walden together in the late afternoon - bung me an email. Click on the link at the top of this posting to go straight to the Stop The War Coalition website. It's co-sponsored by the Muslim Association Of Britain and supported by CND. We can easily make it back to Walden for the evening activities (starting at 7pm). Trains run twice hourly to Audley End from Liverpool Street and (better bet, this) Tottenham Hale, which is quicker from central London thanks to the Victoria Line. We can book a taxi in advance to speed up the last leg of the journey. Rachael, if you don't fancy going within spitting distance of FSSW next weekend, fair enough. But it's not too late to change your mind and turn up - if only for the Quaker meeting on Sunday morning, which promises to be a highly charged occasion for all the reasons you mention. The combination of unprovoked and unimaginable suffering about to be unleashed on other people in our name - plus the fact that a surprising number of people at FSSW did indeed feel ambivalent at best about their experiences there. Sunday meeting in Saffron Walden during the 1996 reunion was once of the most extraordinary, and healing, experiences in my life.

Hi, Although only at FSSW for 2 years (6th form) I have kept in touch with several reprobates and will be attending with Judith Fry and Marilyn Wasyliw(Guy). We hope to be there Saturday and Sunday but left it too late to find accomodation so will return to London in between!! I also have news of Gordon Langford who unfortunately cannot come as he returns to Jamaica this weekend. Hope to catch up with many more from our year.

Just thinking of those days, and thinking of going to the place, makes me feel 17 and rebellious all over again. Weird. I have to confess I'm far less interested in pageants etc. than in seeing everyone from our year who gets there. Ooh, I just remembered those climbing-out-of-windows night trips to wherever it was we had bonfires, cider, cigarettes and toast. Will anyone else admit to remembering that? I know I didn't go alone...

Dear fellow expellee...actually, it was badged as 'suspended indefinitely' in my case, as they needed to invent a form of hybrid-expelling, in order to allow me to temporarily set foot on the grounds & sit my exams! We have Adrian down on the OS database as being in the 1970 Year Group: Adrian - I'll email you our (highly suspect) database listing for that year - tale a peek and see if any of the names look familiar... Richard, I'll look out for you at the weekend if you promise not to give me a dead leg.

It's a pity you can't make it because I was thinking we should have a sub-chapter of the OSA for those of us given an early bath. Hello everyone. Only just found this site and been informed of the reunion (thanks to Steve Willson) I am in a bit of a bind. I really cannot remember the exact year or even who exactly was in the same class as myself. I was expelled in the first year of 6th form - which I think was in around the end of 1968. I remember the school, the town and some faces very well, but the names all escape me now after so many years. Is there anyone out there that remembers me and was in the same class ????????? I am sorry that I cannot make the reunion. I only just learned about it and I live in Switzerland and rarely get back to the UK. I hope to hear from someone soon that can set my mind straight! All the best for the reunion, Adrian Dinneen

What a load of memories contained within all these wonderful pages. I cannot wait till a fortnight's time (or whatever). I am making a special trip back from Nigeria to 'be there'. The other thing that struck me when I was glancing through this message board was just how many people are writing from 'overseas'. I suppose that's the beauty of the system. People marooned in far and away places can feel closer with the Web. Frank Bennat if you are not 'there' I'll come and haunt you! Just to say how sorry I am to be missing the reunion. I didn't go last time (as someone who had some pretty unhappy times at school and didn't wish to be reminded) and then relented enough to join a follow-up evening in Covent Garden some months later; I was amazed to find that I felt so close to people I hadn't seen since I was 16 - we seemed to know each other astonishingly well, considering. It doesn't look as though I can make it across from the States but I hope you all have a great time.

I felt quite maudlin trawling through messages and class lists. I left after O levels and am now only in contact with Tim Graham - and we both hope to come to the Septmeber bash - but are both very nervous. Very nice to see Johnathon Devereux and Deborah Pearce's messages. Jonathon - would love to know what happened to the 4th Gibson House prefect - you, me, Tim and Steven Matthews - anyone know? (we were the 4 four who brought the role of prefect into such disgrace (John Gillets words)Who is the person from our year who left such a sour message? (Dated 20 July 02 - from Wellington NZ) I think quite a few of our year, me included, were on the verge of being thrown out - but I can't remember who actually was. I feel ambivalent towards my time there. At the age of 44 and having very recently had two kids (3rd due very shortly)I have to admit to a huge curiosity. The amount of time at Friends spent drinking, smoking, fondling and groping the opposite sex, lying, idling - when I think about it now, I'm astounded that I even took any O levels let alone passed any. I've been in touch with Helen Wood - at my work address. (I trained as an actor and now work in a related field)Anyone know of Finn Printz-Pahlson, Steven Matthews, Justin Popham?

If you see a bloke in a hen costume acting strangely at the party, it'll probably be Adrian Annis trying to damage Ben Martin's reputation yet further with his own unique brand of prolonged humiliation.

Still a disappointingly small response from other 61ers as far as these messages and other contacts go ... a handful definite for the tercentenary... it would be good to know more may be coming... or are four decades away too far... suspect as we get even older we might regret not seizing this chance... shame not to use this one-off... my first trip back since leaving... not that that counts for much... I just feel it's such an opportunity for a one-off meet... even if it turns out a boring silver-haired convention... but we'll at least know that and it's probably the one and maybe last time we can do so....

Rob, your message doesn't seem very "mild of spirit" or "quakerish". 37 years seems rather a long time to harbour these feelings, maybe you need to change therapists or your medication. In the circumstances, it might be better if you did show up a couple of weeks later on your own. I would hate for you to suffer more. On the other hand I hope you can make it so we can swop ideas on "failure and rejection".

Is this sounding dangerous? First, it looks like a monumental booze up; second, many contributors are clearly misfits, drop-outs and rejects who were (quite rightly, no doubt) turfed out on their ear. Is failure and rejection linked to the urge to bond? Third, we could have Joynes and Headley in tandem. Anyone who recalls their heyday of fear and terror might wish for a right-minded quakerish kind of a get-together for the mild of spirit a week or two later. Any takers?

Charles, Nicholson did the same for me.I was among 3 from my year that were expelled for drinking cyder & stout (yuk) at the Crossed Keys after our O Levels. We would probably have gotten away with it if Drummond Minor hadn't barfed on the roof and washed it off with a fire hose on to a cop car that was bringing Paul Headley back to the school (they'd found him slumped under a tree on the common). The fact that almost the entire form had been out that night didn't seem to concern our Ken or Richard Wright since if they had thrown all the guilty out there would have been only 3 nurds (and Martin Reynolds who always got away with everything) left in 6.1 - happy days! Give me a call at 212 832 2266 (o) and we can down a few to get in the spirit before heading over for the reuinion.

SO sorry to read the email from the chap wh was devastated by John Woods. A furious Brian Capell stormed up the stairs and shouted at the MOD who I won't name "But XXX these boys have been DRINKING." I learned that my dear headmaster later wrote me the most awful reference (ar ewe supposed to know these things?), saying I was completely unsuited to boarding school life and should have been taken away long before. I loved FSSW despite Ken. I hope you will come and join us in September.

Very glad to read some messages from people in my year group, notably Jonny Deveraux who I was describing to my 3 sons last week in connection with the hearing aid advertisement? Do any others of you remember this episode! I am definately coming in September, hoping that Ryan air will deliver me safely to Stanstead from Newquay in time! My mother still lives near SW and I will be staying there for the whole weekend. Leaving 3 sons (15/13/11) for a boys weekend in! At home in Cornwall we now operate a small up market holiday business, an even smaller veg and local produce business and in the summer months a home that resembles a fast food cafe with a launderette in the back. Any one who remembers me would be most welcome to visit during what is left of the summer and I am looking forward, a little nervously, to coming back to FSSW in September. I have some sympathy with who ever that was in my year group about unhappy times at school but feel that it would be worth catching up with people who I spent so much of my time with! I've also enjoyed making new friends out of old acquaintences since we've lived here that I'd like to continue, so be brave give it a go, I think lots of us are a little nervous if we were but honest!!!! Hey Jo, Nice to see your name and message! I'm thinking about attending "this thing". I haven't attended a reunion yet, but this would be a good one; I imagine that one would be able to catch up with several people from our year at one time. I'll ask Ali B if she is going. Also, I recently met Mina's brother by chance in California and am about to contact Mina (in Boston) to see if she might go. Best wishes/philippa

disturbing to read how a few found the fssw experience so dire... suspect there's more of that around? my years now seem so rosey-hued... the school etc really did help me grow and open up and become what i'm now happy to be... i doubt other schools at that time could have done better... so no bad memories... just sunshine and some fun... well, so it seems.. apart from those dreadful cross-country runs... hope those 61ers who said they'd be there for the tercentenary will be...

September promises to be a big month for me as well as for the FSSWOSA. As readers of the OS Report will know, I have been at UCL for the past three years doing my first degree. It's all over now, and my graduation ceremony is on 6th September, followed by my 60th birthday two weeks later (I've just received an official letter telling me that I qualify for the Government's Winter Fuel Payment!). So, by the time I join the celebrations on Sunday 29th (can't make it on the Saturday unfortunately) I'll be a fully fledged if rather grey-feathered graduate at last. Hope to see as many as possible from the 1959, 1960 and 1961 years.

All this OSA stuff - DEFINITELY all part of the therapy ! Of course it's rewarding to help put people back in touch with old chums / happy memories. But you're right. My own payoff has been the chance to pitch OSA events more inclusively. To acknowledge that different individuals had wildly different experiences at FSSW - not just happy but also very painful ones. To offer space for this kind of conversation - as you say, we weren't the only ones. My "therapy" lies in making sure that other people who felt like "outsiders" at school will feel welcomed, acknowledged and included if they venture back this September, along with everyone else. Warm wishes from Wandsworth - Tom

Tom, I’m heartened that you ‘know how I feel’. Yes, some did have a riotously good time. As I implied I had a riotously awful and unsuccessful time. I learnt what it was to be drunk and hung over, I learnt what both tobacco and dope were about, I learnt what it was to be lonely and independent and I became ambivalent about failure, all before I was 17! And no one seemed to care or even notice. I am sorry to hear that you consider that you were a pretty ‘disturbed individual’; I hope you are not suggesting that I either may be or may have been (but maybe I am or was!!). I think my environment disturbed me. I’m glad you have found your way of coping and indeed I wonder if all this OSA stuff is apart of your therapy. Well done for finding it. Yes, I have also found ways. I am interested to find this message board and see what others say and feel. As you say, I fear I am not alone.

Yeah - I know how you feel. Some people obviously had a riotously good time at school, but my own time at Walden came to a close with taking an overdose and trying to kill myself. To be fair, I was a pretty disturbed individual at the time and would probably have run into the buffers sooner or later wherever I'd been - in the event I ended up (thanks to kenneth Nicholson) at a community which did indeed provide the kind of imaginative and caring support that a f***ed up adolescent like me deeply needed. As for recovering from old wounds and grievances, we all (hopefully) find our own best way of coping. Mine was to go back and face the place where all that misery and desperation took place and realise at last that it had no more power over me. And finally in 1996 I actually met and made my peace with one of the people who'd hurt and humiliated me when I was smaller and weaker, and was able to let go of all that pain and resentment once and for all. A few other people since told me they had similar experiences that year, but of course there are plenty of other people on the class lists who are marked "PRIVACY PLEASE" and want nothing more to do with their shcooldays. Hey - fair enough. Each to his or her own. Wishing you well in Wellington... Tom Robinson

A BIT OF HISTORY FOR YOU: I don't know if school records go back that far but my grandfather was at Friend's School from 1900 to 1904. In fact he was Head Boy in 1904. His brother Maurice who was born in 1887 and his sister Edith born 1892 were also there. Anybody remember them??????!!

FARRAND RADLEY I now have the latest bulletin on Farrand Radley (at FSSW 1927-33) from his wife, Laura (on Thurs, 9-5-02). In early March he sustained a fall/stroke or stroke/fall (not ascertained) at the entrance to his home on returning from a meeting. He was originally in St Mary'sPaddington but is now in their annexe, St Charles' Hospital, Exmoor Street, London W10 (my book says it's in Ladbroke Grove). He is awaiting further scans, etc. Laura tells me he is quite lucid and I am sure he would appreciate any greetings from OS in the form of cards,&c.

Interesting reading on the message board. I came to the Friends Reunited via my children (all in their thirties) and hope to do some catching up with old friends. I've not moved anywhere exotic like so many, but am experiencing a new lease of life post divorce. I hope to be at the reunion - I can remember dancing on the front lawn at the 250th - and watching in awe all the very ancient old pupils who looked not a day under 90!

Hello to everyone I knew at Walden in the late 40s and early 50s! It's a long time since I communicated with any of you (except Brian Hosking,Ian McKean and, my two brothers Robin and Peter)and I feel sadly out-of-touch with the school. My wife Babs and I, our four children and seven grandchildren all live in this beautiful city of Ottawa within a few kilometers of one-another. I retired in 1999 having worked the last 17 years as an engineer with the Canadian Nuclear regulator. I still do some part time consulting work. Babs and I spend alot of time with our family and we are both quite active in our church. I manage to keep reasonably fit playing badminton in winter and tennis in the summer. Having spent much time travelling and seeing the world when our chldren were young, we don't have a strong desire to ravel any more. However, we do plan to make a trip to the UK again soon, but it won't be this year. So, unfortunately I won't be able to make the reunion in September. My very best wishes to all comtemporaries. If any of you are planning a visit to Ottawa, please get in touch. Ted D

Tom Robinson has achieved something amazing with his web site address. I got onto it quite a while ago but no one seemed to be giving him the credit due. I came back to it after my sister in-law resident in Camborne Cornwall had found a "new site" friendsreunited.com.uk This gives a lot of the UK schools. Tom's "oldscholars.com" must be the envy of thousands of oldscholar association web masters.Remenber, it is unique world wide.

To Mike and Libby Duffill and also Chris Phipps-Jones and any one else who remembers us, I am pleased to say that I met up with John Pilgrim last week in Calgary where we had an excellent lunch and a great conversation. I very much doubt that I will make the reunion in September, but am quietly revelling in the pleasure of being back in touch with John. Part of this has been to discover that although we had not seen each other in years, our lives and careers has some stunning parallels giving us so much more to share than memories of our glorious (and sometimes mis-spent) youth.

Maths Luke, maths. Do keep up dear boy. My memory of Richard Wright is .............. As maybe the case to-day, around lights out time in the dormitory the trick was to engage the Master On Duty in conversation, to keep his hand away from the light switch as long as possible. Topics that you would not normally have an interest in would be earnestly introduced if we thought it would engage the MOD. The MOD of course knew what we were up to but usually he played along to a greater or lesser extent. With Richard I remember stunningly bad jokes.............. "There were two ants on a packet of corn flakes (or soap flakes, or whatever). One was running along a dotted line on the box. When his chum caught him up at the other end of the line the first was sat down puffing, panting, perspiring and red in the face. 'Whatever did you do that for?' asked the second ant 'Can't you read' gasped the first pointing at some lettering along the dotted line 'It says tear along the dotted line'".........groans from Richards audience.. "Sir! That's your worst yet!" ..... "Lights out boys." CLICK... Being remebered for telling terrible jokes is good in my book but, of course, Richard is remembered for a lot more than that.

Sorry to hear about death of RIchard Wright last week - one more link with the past severed for many of us. Just a quick point of information and a hot tip - the accommodation listings are finally up on this site, and if you're thinking of coming next September get in there quick and grab a decent room while you can - you can still cancel again later with months to spare, but demand is going to be huge and decent hotels are few and far between. Crown House in Gt Chesterford is both reasonable and good if you've got a car. Saffron Hotel's comfortable and conveniently in town - but overpriced. Buut it's first come first served - the info has just gone up today February 15, 2002. Best - Tom Robinson

Nerger, Nergha, whatever. But talking about Nurgar and harmless arrows... I got the reputation at one stage of being regularly hauled up before the man in question. It didn't happen as often as was supposed. I think I enjoyed the reputation so exaggerated to bolster it. However, my inaugural rollocking sticks in my mind. After being stood outside quaking for the required period I was summoned inside and one of the first things Nergha said was "I hear you are thinking of joining the merchant navy". I had thought about it in truth but I had not shared the thought with anyone. ESP or what? Anyway he proceeded to lecture me and the whole lot went entirely over my head. I emerged wondering what the heck it was all about. Didn't even detect whether it was a rollocking or some sort of abstruse careers guidance! It wasn't till about a week later the light finally dawned. Someone - I think it was John Hansen - said "I hear you got Godfrey Lamb's rollocking off the Nerg". My namesake Godfrey Lamb (no relative) was one year my senior and had the reputation of frequently being in the fertiliser. By the by was it the Nerg who was photographed walking down the avenue with R A Butler or was it Gerald Littleboy? I remember they seemed like two peas out of the same pod

Martin Hall and I used to spell it Nergha in the crude and savage fantasy cartoon strips we drew, based loosely around characters at school. Character assassination barely begins to cover it - all that twisted adolescent angst channelled into a maelstrom of bile and vitriol directed at the mildest and most undeserving of targets. In the case of KFN it was to prove particularly shameful & misconceived - said angst, bile and vitriol finally erupted into me having a fullscale nervous breakdown as a boarder right there at school. It was Mr Nicholson who found me a place at Finchden Manor community in Kent which more or less saved my life. And then he died only a couple of years later - I never did get the chance to thank him properly. Schooldays - the happiest days of our lives, allegedly. Current news: am playing some gigs in UK at the moment with a couple of friends - see http://www.faithfolkanarchy.com - if any Old Scholars out there have nothing better to do and fancy catching one of the shows, bung me an email and I'll put you on the guest list.

Glad to see everyone's calmed down now. Masterful bit of oil-pouring by Robin Lamb. This FS stuff is strange... does anyone know the correct spelling of nurger? Possibly nirghar or nerguer, or maybe it's spoken language only. At the first assembly, feeling confused but excited, Nurger treated us to an introductory message that shot over my head like a harmless arrow. What can he have meant? It rocked me to the core, realising a lack of equipment to cope with grown up talk. What on earth was he telling us? To get it into perspective, this was a man who drove a Ford Classic, often with one flat tire. How good can his judgement really have been? On the occasion of being rumbled for having bad pictures (cheeky display of lacy buttock) my interview took place in a chair whose arm-rests were marked by the perspiration of many anxious victims. The punishment never happened and my mild dissimilations were met politely. In the end his influence was always benign and in my case far reaching. I wonder if the master set of keys is still where we hid them. Will have to have a go at finding them in September.

Well Luke you got a vote of confidence there! I did think of challenging someone to a duel to defend the integrity of the 61ers - wastepaper baskets at 20 feet or something. However, I thought that a response from me that sounded witty and erudite to my ears would probably fall on stony ground as far as the younger generations go. One does get aware of the chasm between us and the youngsters which, when we were their age, we swore would never happen. But it has - to the point where I am sometimes cruelly compared to Victor Meldrew - "his older and more irascible brother" as my darling daughters would have it. Although, now that they have sons and daughters of their own, they are gradually coming around to my way of thinking. But then that's the way it goes. The youngsters, especially the boys, do seem more pre-menstrual than I thought was the case in our day - but then again I suppose my mother would tell me different. I remember having a discussion with Jo Griew (we must both have been about 17 or so) where I declared that I wasn't going to get married till I was well past thirty and I wasn't much fussed about life after forty - I wonder if she remembers that. On the first count, I just about made twenty before I got married. On the second I am now accelerating towards 60 and still enjoying life - if only to get one over my daughters!

Having spent 25 years in the motor trade with my own small garage in Suffolk I sold up and my wife Felicity and I bought a 7 bedroom guest house in Salisbury. My wife teaches part time where she is head of science at a small private school here in Salisbury. We have been here just over 5 years and it is very different from running a garage. CLEAN HANDS. My son Nicholas is now 23 and is in his final year of a medical digree at Manchester University. Joined Rotary 16 years ago and was my clubs president last year.

Hello David. It's been a long time since I saw you last. Are you still in 'Arlow near London? I'd forgotten about your driving exploits. To change the subject totally, has anyone else had to read Harry Potter out loud? When I read it to my daughter I found myself imitating the head whenever Professor Snape spoke.... Best wishes Michael (aka Grookle thanks to Tom Walker)

Apologies also to the chap i ran over on the basketball court in that go-cart, come lawn mower we built. I am still driving but a bit more careful these days. I'm sure someone out there will have some fond, (and not so fond) memories of these, Sorry again to anyone i left needing therapy.

Just to say hi to any of my year group who have reached the age at which a certain nostalgia has set in. I am now succesfully leading a blameless life (!?) but seem to remember that a small portion of my youth was spent on the roof of main school. We were above the girls' dorms and got caught escaping over M. Brandons roof. I can clearly remember that Martin Ally was with us as was Paul Jones. I seem to think that Mr S Gant was also in the frame, but can't swear to it. Does anyone else remember who got caught (we held the school record for punni, the whole of the summer term). And does this record still stand ?

I thought this might be the easiest way of letting people know where I am.....I'm looking forward to hearing about the reunion in 2002. Having been at one May 96, (I think) which felt life-changing, catching up with all those people I had spent five of my formative years with at a place which was distant, but familiar and small with all the memories which went with it, I might even make the effort to be back in the UK for this one!

Ah yes, the 1960 panoramic photograph. If my memory serves (and there's a less than 50-50 chance of this) after the camera panned past, someone on the extreme left of the photograph took off round the back to try and get to the other end of the photograph before the camera did. I remember the drumming of running feet and the sounds of a skirmish when he was intercepted. I think it was Jeremy Strange (extreme left, 4th row back, immediately behind Ian Drummond) but it might have been the guy right at the back (Matthew Robinson??).

Sorry I won't make it for the reunion this year Tom but things have changed a little here (and around the world for that matter) in the last week. We're all a little stunned right now and trying to sort out our emotions. Having lived in London during the IRA campaign one is more used to a terrorist threat but nothing can prepare you for watching 10 million square feet of office space and thousands of people just fall to the ground. We're still breathing in the smoke here in Manhattan. Although the city is gradually getting back together there are signs everywhere that somrthing terrible has happened. All over the city people have pasted photos of their loved ones who are missing: there are troops or police on almost every corner: candles are placed on steps and monuments, sometimes 2 or three, sometimes hundreds: and there are the flags. Everywhere flags, and people calling for revenge. There are very few voices pleading for restraint or asking why someone would hate this country enough to do this. Hypocrisy is everywhere - America thinks terrorism started last Tuesday and are oblivious to the millions of dollars collected from the Irish bars on 2nd Avenue that have been funding bombs in other lands. Some of us are trying to get out the message of breaking the cycle of violence that will create 10 more Bin Ladins even if they can get him this time. Funny, England 5, Germany 1 seems such a long time ago and a little less important now. Oh, and Jeremy West, your time with the Surrey Police didn't seem to improve your powers of observation - I spoke with you at the reunion in 96! Allo, Allo,Allo.
