I have just discovered that i have been working with Diana Slee (now Choudary) for the last few months, in the same school. She was describing some historical features of Saffron Walden, saying they were near her old school and I piped up that i could tell where she went ! It's great to see so many messages and even greater to see that some are from the class of 91 (89 for some of us!!). Since leaving FSSW I have worked for a bank, run a couple of pubs and am now a project manager for NTL delivering interactive services to our digital cable television service. I am really up for a reunion - it has been 12 years! Hope to see as many of you as possible on the 19th May 2001. You can't still be supporting Chelsea Lee! Anyway it's an interesting website and it seems impossible that my own children are now all past school age and the oldest has just married and is living in the Black Forest teaching English to the Germans. Wrote... Well Good Morning to All! Believe it or not I just found the Friends' School Website while conducting a little architectural research on the web yesterday! To say the least, I am smiling all over!! My name is Susan Gee - I attended Junior House from 1959 until April, 1966 (oooohhh my, that was some time ago!). The Head Mistress was Miss Jeanne Barrie. I am wondering if indeed you are also gathering names for this period of the Friends School - sadly I see no reference to the wonderful house that was the home of Junior House on the Timeline Table, (or have I overlooked a particular something?). When I re-visited England in 1986, of course I went to visit the old school, and well, as we know, it was not there. Meanwhile, ANY information you may have regarding such a name list would be very much appreciated, and of course, I would be very happy indeed to provide you with a student's perspecive from those days (the memory is RAZOR SHARP!!). Wrote... I have just looked at the school photo for 1960 and quite amazed to see myself on it. I left Walden in 1955 and went to teach in London. In the Spring of 1960 I gave up my job, intending to emigrate to Australia for �10. When I had second thoughts Jenny Ellinor, then Headmistress, gave me a last minute job as housemistress-cum-out-of-school-activities for junior girls for the summer term. She told me that a school inspection had found the school had not been academic enough. New staff appointments had redressed that but she thought things had gone too far,and the juniors at least could be allowed a bit of time off. (In the '50s serious "swatting" was definitely not on!)

Well, the news that I have on old scholars from 1991 (in answer to Rachel Smy's request) is that Nick McDermott recently came out of university with a 1st class honours in Electronic Engineering and is working in Brighton, Adrian Cronin is a qualified Construction Engineer, Ben Martin is a construction buyer based in Cambridge, Adrian Annis is designing websites and Simon Isaac is programming computers. As for me, I've ended up (via the last 6 years in international media) as the Commercial Manager for F1 Racing. Not a bad turn around for the rat pack I thought... Anyway, it's also nice to hear that the infamous Eleanor Careless is alive & kicking...if you read this Eleanor, thanks for one of the most entertaining memories of Friends' School. V.amusing. Distant memories of toast in the radio room, cross country runs and the green room in the assembly room. Any one still out there? Class of 72? As someone else said - What news? Pottery class over the road. The art room. Climbing through the loft. Awful times too - of being lonely Still kept in touch with two people - Dorian Hawkey - living in San Francisco for the last twenty years and Stephanie Nunn, lost touch recently. All of us friends in London for several years. - and me? Oh yes a chequered career. London - Art school - performance art - juggling performing Ra-Ra Zoo Theatre company, touring the world, fame, fortune, well almost - injury - semi retirement to Ireland. Living now with Anne and our daughters Aisha (11yr) and Stephanie (1yr 6mo) in Allihies with goats and chickens and ducks and happy mostly...

Wrote... Thanks for your comments Tom, it's good to know someone reads what I put on the noticeboard! Historically up to 1966 the Reunion was three days over the Whit W/E. I can remember it well when I was at Walden in the 40's. From 1967 to mid 70's it was on the Sunday and Monday of the Whit W/E. From mid 70's to 1989 it was Monday only. From 1990 to 1994 it was on the Sunday only, then from 1995 to 2000 it has been both the Saturday and Sunday. Now in 2001 a precedent is being created by having it on a Saturday only. If it is going to be one day only surely more people will be able to get to Walden on the Sunday, as some people tend to work on a Saturday. In recent times it has been only on a Sunday, and obviously worked OK.

Wrote... for Michael Booth's information (class of 81, message 20 Aug), I believe the chem / physics lab fire (when the buildings burnt down) was in the mid 1950's - a year or two before 1958 (my first year) by which time the 'new' labs were in place. I don't recall Donald Benson having a story about Cyril Mummery's comments (in our time at FSSW). Sayings of those two that stick in my mind: DOB: "If you don't know what a thing is, give it a name. And then you can talk about it." (which goes for most things in Physics??!) reference pupils being particularly slow in learning some basic historical fact, CAM: "A moderately intelligent parrot would have learnt that by now" Mike (D)(message 26 Aug) : One of these weekends I'll see if I can dig out the old photos - including panoramic if poss. - then we'll really be able to see whether we've changed!

Wrote... Just on a point of information - in recent years right up until 1995 or 1996 all reunions I attended were one-day events only. We staged a two-day reunion when I was president in 1996. But a great many people could only come for one of the two days, and moaned afterwards because they missed loads of their friends who had come the other day. The Saturday proved vastly more popular than the Sunday for some reason. (Perhaps because people don't have to leave early to get back home in time for work the next day ?)

It was in a bad way, he's probably still doing it! Wiggers is right about Boydell, given name "Simon". Why is there an unbreakable association in my mind between that name and Diana Smith? Uncanny! Message for Stephen Brand... Junior House was, I think, in Audley Road and was demolished a good few years back to build "executive houses" and residences for the elderly. Bell College is in South Road in the old Ladies Teacher Training College premises. It's still there. I think John Simons, year of 65 went to Junior House, so he may be able to confirm this.

Wrote... I went to the school from Jan 1980 and left in June 1983. I can't believe that was nearly 17 years ago!!! I don't feel old! On leaving, I did a few lowsy jobs in my home town of Hastings before getting a (not much better) job in the City of London which is where I have been since Dec 1987. I became a born again Christian in October 1988 (you should try it sometime!) and have been blessed with a much better job and also my own home (in Walthamstow). Some suggested alterations to the class lists : 1928 list - please include the name of Edward Dunstan Sen., my father, now deceased. 1950/1955 list - delete the name of Sarah Newman in the 1950 list and include her in the 1955. 1956 list - might be an idea to add 'Jun.'after the name Edward Dunstan (the middle Dunstan brother) 1958 list - include the name of Peter Dunstan (the younger of my 2 younger brothers!)
