Having a clean-out in my sewing room (the nerve centre of the house!! I am addicted to patchwork and quilting) and came across the 2003 Magazine, and realised it was ages since I had been on the message board. So if there are any from my year (1961 - 1968) out there reading this, I would love to hear from you. Been living in Auckland now for 33 years next month, how times flies, wouldn't live anywhere else in the world, but love visiting family back in England. Had 2 trips there in 2003, the first in February ( I had forgotten how cold England can be!) to look after my mother and we had a wonderful 3+ weeks together, and then back in August for her funeral and to help sort out her house. My boys are now 23 and 20, both of them are electrical apprentices! Ben, the older, has been engaged to Michelle who he met at school for nearly 3 years, but no sign of a wedding yet. They own their own house (a very Kiwi thing) and have 3 cats. Sam still lives at home, we are still in the same house on 10 acres of native bush on the outskirts of Auckland. Ross and I will have been married 31 years next month! He is a very keen golfer on a handicap of 4, and his job is sales rep for a golf equipment company run by his best friend!! I have just become President of the local patchwork and quilting club with a membership of about 70 - 80. I am a quilt competition junkie - over the past 10 years I have been in for over 40 competitions and won a few prizes, had quilts travel around New Zealand and go to the States and UK. I also have a pet feeding business, and feed people's pets when they go away on holiday, mostly cats (have 70+ of them on my "books"). And finally I also work for the local real estate agent, delivering flyers promoting houses for sale/forthcoming auctions. I love this job as I get paid to exercise!! Look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers me, though I have to admit I have changed a bit since those days at Walden - not nearly as shy now!

In response to Nigel's suggestion of a 30 year reunion, yes, why not, please organise! Sally Wright (Godfrey) and Lucy Taylor (Sutton) met up with me today and we would love to meet up with everyone perhaps in our 50th years i.e. 2006. It was such good fun to look through photos and talk about our time at FSSW. Is there anyone out there in a position to organise something in Saffers or anywhere that suits?? As a fellow Suttonian, I also haven't left any messages for over a year - but my PC was down with hard disk failure! For Jan & Judy, I'm in contact with three siblings of Old Scholars from about YG68 if wanting to trace any: Colin Bell, Maggie LeMere & Dave Gaussen all live in Edgbaston, Birmingham. As does Sarah Evans, the exFSSW head following John Woods, and now at the King Edwards School where my youngest is about to start!

Judy Holt (Kemp) and I meet up from time to time as we live nearer than I have ever lived to a school friend -about 6 miles. For such a big place there are surprising few FSSWOS in Birmingham but if anyone is ever near, do get in touch. Also been meeting up with OS at Quaker Camping Club.

Sorry can't remember the year group far too long ago! Just a short note to say I look in here from time to time, but don't always post - I havn't much to say apart from inane chatter about me me me, so I resist most of the time. Work over the past few years has been very patchy for me a freelance IT and Sales Trainer. However, in the 'off' periods, I have been playing with 'boys toys' in the workshop. Just because I'm feeling smug about it, here's a link to the GTM kit car I finished and registered early this month. It took 2 years to build, and now I'm told that I've got plenty of jobs to do on the house! (I've done 1 track day in it already) http://www.drawmer.net/libra/librabuild.htm

Barbie Norden with the frizzy hair in the upper 6th then used to talk to me. They had Mars bars all around the picture rail in their common room. I am an artist and guitarist living in central bristol. Is Oriole Parker Rhodes about or Nina the guitarist or Barbie? Or the girl with make up and short blond hair. I was on a scholarship started school in jan 65. Also glad to read news of the Greaves brothers I remember I think. Hi to any of you living / working in Birmingham. I recently wanted to reconnect to Quakers but going to a meeting regularly on Sundays does not suit. I have discovered a Thursday evening meeting at 6pm at Bull Street Meeting House in the centre of Birmingham. My first visit suggests it is a very small gathering but perhaps there are others like me who, if they knew about it, would attend. Get in touch with me or check the Warwickshire Friends site if you plan to come along.

My Grandfather William Irving Gibbs was a student here approx 1889-1903.He was born in Colesberg,Cape Colony,South Africa 1888 and was sent to the Friends School Saffron Waldon. He won many swimming medals. He also had a younger bother Eric Swift Gibbs who also may have gone there. I am trying to do my families geneology and would love to know if you could verify Williams dates at your school. As I do have an old post card of the school and one old class photo. He is long since passed away and his daughter my Mother is in here late 80's and has a patchy memory of her fathers school days. When he left school he sailed to the US and then sailed up to Canada where he pioneered the west coast of Vancouver Island. Other Quaker cousins were William Herbert Dann and Eva Jane Dann (sidcot Scholar 1897-1902 and 1903 at Mount School.) Arthur John Dann(Ackworth Scholar 1893-6), Reginald Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1893-97),Margaret Dann(Ackworth Scholar 1895-97),Ernest Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1896-7), Thomas Tully Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1896-7 were he accidently died), Robert Horniman Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1903-5), Henry Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1903-7), John Dorland Dann (Ackworth Scholar 1906-7). There were also other Dann's and Heald families but I have no record of them going to Quaker schools. I would love to have any information you have recorded about my Grandfather. Go to our school site - then '1982' - then click on my name. I found a packet of negatives and a few aged photos – and couldn’t resist. It only took one evening. Just pray I don’t ever find the big shoebox full I once had! Anyone else got any photos? Why not scan them and post up? Then all you have to do is lie back and wait for the letters from the lawyers to roll in!

Hello all - Especially Jill, Ian, John and Mollie Sorry I could not make it on 22nd of this month, busy times. But as Ian said, we should try to get together to celebrate 40 years of staying alive and well(are you sure it is 40 years and not 20? seems to have passed too quickly.) So, who's up for it? Who knows I might even be able to persuade Mike to come which would be really great. Any takers ?

Hi. In answer to John Pilgrim's remark about the weather: you got that right! We got down to -35C, then this month we had 25C, then -3C, and Tuesday it snowed off and on all day! OK, so you lived in South Africa - I lived in Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. So is either of us sane? Never mind, the trees are beginning to show a little green now and my spirits rise accordingly. Hope to see you soon John. And my love to the rest of you.

Hi Jill, John P. Libby and all of you. Oh yes, I too enjoyed the latest OSA magazine. No I will not be able to make the reunion on May 22. In truth the year has flown by and I am up to my ears in work right now and have long ago agreed to be in Peru on that date. But September is another matter. I have been wondering if that could be a time to get together. It is our 40th year from graduation - quite and achievement and worth paying atttention to each other over. September is a time I can plan for, my schedule is open then and I would joyfully commit to being there if others are interested in making up a group that might meet for more than the ball - say lunch or brunch the day after as well so we can talk??. What do you think???

Flying through Heathrow over easter on my way to Germany on a hockey assignment I was able to meet up with Libby (Duffill) for an extended lunch. Great to catch up on all the news. Ian Thomson and I talk by phone quite frequently and we will be visiting the island for a few days later this year so we can meet up again. Spring has arrived on the east side of the rockies at last so we are looking at some green grass as opposed to snow for the first time in some months. This has been a long winter but fortunately we missed out this year on the extreme cold that can occur here. -30 is a fairly regular occurence with -40 on occasions.....!! That is when I question my sanity in choosing to leave South Africa as we did so many years ago. I have been in touch with Naomi Stinson and hope to meet up with her the next time that I am in Edmonton.

Greetings from Downunder ! Autumn is beginning to creep in to these Southerly latitudes and the heat of summer is just about over. We have had the hotest summer for 50 years but, fortunately, there were hardly any bushfires this year after last year's devastation in Canberra. Being "upside down", we tend to get a lot of plants, bushes and trees flowering this time of the year, so it is quite a colourful time and as most of our trees are evergreens, we don't get the terrible starkness of the northern winter. By the same token, spring is hardly noticeable when it arrives in September. I'll be over in July (9th to 13th) for a quick visit to SW to see aged mother (95 this year and still playing rugby) so if anyone is going to be around, get in touch !

Ellen Hayes WITHERS was the daughter of James and Eliza WITHERS and two of her brothers were Archibald Henry WITHERS & Joseph James WITHERS both of whom were Old Scholar Members. Joseph's children were Edith, Ernest, Harold, Ethel & Mabel. Arthur Newton BALL & Laura's children were Patrick, Edward and Doreen. I would love to hear from anyone who recognises any of these people, please email me. Also; Thomas Frederick BALL was an author and I know of 4 books that he wrote, I would love a copy of a book that he co-wrote with William BECK in 1865. It is called "The London Friends' Meeting's" If anyone can help please let me know. Regards Julie

There must have been some special energy in the air sitting here in Dallas airport, en route to an assignment in Bolivia. I finished looking at email and had a strong feeling that I should check the FSSW site. And there were these good messages from Mollie, Libby and Jil. I think of all of you quite often now, and talk to John (Pilgrim) from time to time. The reunion brough many things together for me and I am gratefull for it all. Mollie - I will be on the Wwest Coast or at least based there for ever, I think. My family is deeply dug in to Island life and unlikely to wander far. I asm the peripatetic one, wandering off to work in South America like a trans-continental commuter. And Libby, will you make it out to the Pacific side of Canada??? I do hope so. Happy New Year - especially 1964ers. Can't believe how long it is since I looked on this site but I know Libby's message from January 8 2003 is new to me and the answer is obviously "no sorry"! Also agree with John (Pilgrim) it's no good logging on, reading and logging off as I intended to do - hence this message. And for Paul Fry - apart from great to read your news - please don't forget "Bird up on my Bike"! One reason for absence is our move from Surrey to sunny Suffolk 2 weeks before Christmas - not to be recommended as a good time to move - but we now live in the house next door to one my father built back in 1964. Hi guys, Hey these follow-up mini re-unions or year-group things i.e meal in Walden are a good idea! Any takers for yr.'69? Its difficult aint it cos we all so scattered around world now. I'm amazed and have been nicely re-assured by reading some of the messages, cos i was unhappy but at the time, & for years afterwards, thought i was the only one! Some of us did have issues about girls/not mixing well/lack of academic progress then! Its funny that at the time we could not talk about these things, there was so much 'pressure' to conform, to be macho/sexy/thick/brainy etc and 'mature' (whatever that meant) and admit these things after veritable ages have passed! What a waste of time and 'feelings-energy'! It would be great to think there may be a 'chill-out room' at the school where ppl with inner-issues that are bugging them can can meet up with the guidance of a trusted older-but-cool person to share stuff (i dont mean moans about which team to be in or the colour of school uniform etc). It would help alot to make schooldays happier and more productive, & save hassle in later life. If i'd been happier at school i would have probably passed my GCE's, stayed on to the 6th form(s), gone on to Uni or a decent college without having to waste as much time & not had a fear of rejection asking girls out etc etc, & probly would have kept my x-c going (for what it was worth)& not started smoking! So if there aint one yet, someone shuld get off their butt & create one!! Cheers guys catchup l8tr.

Anyway news update for one and all - I am now engaged and will be getting married in 2005 (money permitting earlier knot tying). Kevin, judging by the Tercenterery, everyone remembers each-other - although I for one wouldn't have recognised every face! As far as I know, even those that were unsure about going to the Tercentenery, thoroughly enjoyed it-and that is why this follow-up is being organised. Some, that were unhappy at FSSW, even buried a few ghosts from the past. If some are planning to come from half way round the World, are you able to make it from Ealing! Regards to you and your wife, if you cannot make it.

Thinking about the year '72 50th do, FSSW and you all: I must say it's a bit daunting, 32 years is a long time, will we recognise one another? Will we remember the good and bad of Walden or is it just a distant fog? My world there held too much of Pink and not enough development. Truth is I could never settle in and get anything done at Walden, academia was not for me and a jaded view of females made me evenly unbalanced in that area before I arrived at FSSW in 6(1). I hope you will have all either forgotten of forgiven my inept behaviours? Actually my wife still notices some of them even now so you may be reminded, I hope not. Does anyone remember me, perish the thought that noone will respond, but perhaps that would not be so bad, my youthful foible's really need no exposure in middle age! My admiration goes out to Cathy,Celia and the others (Dunno who) that are organising the thrash. My regards to any of the gang who see this, long may you prosper in your chosen worlds.

I was delighted that rejoining the OSA around a year ago meant that I was made aware of the tercentenary celebrations - easy for me to attend as I live only just down the road. These celebrations were particularly interesting as I had attended those fifty years earlier. The idea of the Friday evening dinner in the Eight Bells for those of my vintage was an excellent idea and I was surprised not only by the high turnout, but by the number of people I remembered and how many of those were instantly recognizable. At the tercentenary celebrations I very much missed the presence of Richard Wright and was pleased to have been able to attend his memorial service earlier last year. Until some eight years ago, although living in Cambridge, I had been a member of the Saffron Walden Choral Society so had seen Hildegard each week and Richard slightly less often. He had always seemed to me to be a strong symbol of the continuity of the school quite apart from everything else he was involved in. I well remember being an assitant at SW summer schools in 1949 and 1950 which he ran with great success. I have recently sold my Cambridge business centre business to give me more time for other things, especially for my year as Mayor of Cambridge, which will continue until 24 June 2004. Being mayor of any city is a very rewarding position to hold, but in the case of Cambridge is particularly special. If any OS are coming to Cambridge at any time I shall be delighted to welcome them to the Guildhall. However, please contact me first by e-mail or phone (office 01223 457023) to check on my availability. Greetings to all David

Hi Robert, great to hear from you & thanks for your compliments! Yep i remember you with lots of fair hair and a big smile and sense of humour! So wat you up to these days, i gather your in France, thats cool!, & do hope things are going well for you. I liked the bit about 'pleasingly subversive in a quiet way'! i think by the 5th form i was coming out of myself more, but i wish it hadnt taken so long! Still basically very laid-back, but i branched out alot with the horse work, socially, etc, have a great bunch of mates playing pool, watching footie over a few beers etc but still too 'single'(!), hoping my ex g/f & me will get going again but just dunno yet. Isnt it great how much has changed for the better since rather grim mono-chromatic 1960's days of some of my memories: end of cold war, Berlin wall down, Chowshesku (phoenetic, cant spell it)& others bumped off, many more personal freedoms etc now. Still alot wrong with the world but i cant help feeling things are getting better. I guess, and would hope, that things are better at the school now but i dont know cos i havent been back there yet. I hope the food is much better & that different diets are catered for & that ppl can dress more as they want & that hopefully there is a skateboard park & there are entertainments & clubbin gigs etc to compliment the academic side, & far more 'civilised' approach to the running of the school i.e. proper general loos, duvets instead of having 'hospital corners' checked and decent beds/mattresses, good hairdressing salon catering for all tastes, etc etc. I'm really stirring it arent i?! Okay Rob better go, thanks again mate, do e me bak if you want, very best wishes, Dav.

Hello Dave You were sallow, lean and hirsute. Pleasingly subversive in a silent sort of way. I remember you reading DH Laurence in fact that's who you looked like at a tender age when I still liked Biggles; or was it A Huxley (who later went on to become one of my heros maybe too late actually). Well anyway it's nice to see your well-balanced message on the message board. I wonder if the deafening silence since the unlucky conflict between the peace march and the 2002 reunion is in fact a quakerly response from those who felt the peace march was throttled in too heavy handed a way by the powers that be. Being dashed down by the authorities was indeed a bitter pill to swallow though perhaps an appropriate one as it conjured up such a realistic echo of the past. It was perfectly easy to attend both on the same day and I was certainly not alone in doing so. Oh well. Good luck with the horses. Robert

Hiya ppl! Well it seems a good time has been had at re-unions and things and i nearly made it last year but stuff happened so i didnt. Firstly apologies to any masters or mistresses who may be reading this for colloquial abbreviated computer-speak; secondly to those who maybe saying "who's this" (or even musing upon the identity of the author), i am the quiet one (or one of them) who struggled in the later stages of academia and was even worse at sport except x-c! but its okay cos i made up for it by becoming a horse trainer and riding instructor. Having cart-wheeled into this FSSW site i'm finding it really interesting to see what some of us have been up to, and in a way i cant get over the passage of time since those morning "get-your-asses-out-of-bed" bells, gongs summoning starving pupils to tables creaking under the weight of delicious meals, and yes...those romantic strolls up and down the Avenue with our heads full of ideas for articles in the magazine...erm well something like that anyway. You younger guys, whats the food like now, i hope its better for you cos in those days it was an absolute disgrace...but then that was the enlightened enfranchised liberal nineteen sixties! Okay so well done all of you who supported the peace marches and voted against having a war etc (i really mean that) but what does one do with these tyrants and despots (i'm not talking about headmasters sportsmasters latin teachers or even school meals caterers!)but the international political consequences are quite brain-teasing. End of social history lesson. I've been bumming around with a backpack doing some travelling in europe lately - fascinating, practising my french etc. Right thats it folks gotta go, n e 1 wishes to float me an 'e' it'll be replied to! Best wishes, Dave the rave or wateva i waz called.

Rich Smart introduced us to Boules (& competeitive as he was 33 years ago!) and Steve Willson introduced us to some real ale from the Hogs Back Brewery. Next year's event is hoped to be more central (Oxford or north of Watford or more volunteers?) and so accessible to some who thought the south coast is too far!! Txs to Anne for holding it and to everyone who made the journey.

I have recently received a letter from Miss Fabienne Eaton asking for news of the Eggleton Sisters - Julie EGGLETON (1939-42) & Mollie EGGLETON (1939-45) who were day girls, living at 18, Landscape View, Saffron Walden in the 40s. Mollie subsequently moved to Burnham-on-Sea, in Somerset and Julie trained as a nurse at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and obtained her SRN in 1947. Unfortunately unable to join London march or candlelight vigil tonight but I was in York yesterday visiting my mother and joined in an anti-war march with 3,500 others with a good Quaker presence including a speech from a Bootham pupil. One of the biggest cheers was for a suggestion by what seemed to be a fairly committed Socialist that a Lib Dem Councillor who had just spoken should replace the City's Labour M.P. Pressure on individual M.P.s, particularly Labour, is needed. It is frustrating that this seems all we can do. Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Hi Everyone Please join the worldwide candlelight vigil for peace planned for March 16th at 7pm. Beginning in New Zealand, this will be a rolling wave of candlelight gatherings that will quickly cross the globe. But we need as many people as possible to make it work. For details of the vigil nearest you (or to arange your own) please visit www.globalvigil.org .This is sponsored by MoveOn.org and the Win Without War coalition, together with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many faith-based organizations. It's up to us all to make this happen. We're hoping that, without the need to travel to a march, thousands of small groups around the world will be inspired to come together and stand for peace. http://www.globalvigil.org It's time for the world to come together in this moment of darkness and rekindle the light of reason -- and of hope. With your help, we will see the first candlelight vigil to sweep around the globe on the evening of March 16th. This is a key moment in history. Please be part of it. Thank you, Richard

Comments noted from the 60's lurkers, welcome back!! From my side of the pond I have to ask when "common sense" was last detected in an elected politician? I presume our Canadians are just as bad as your lot. Here however they seem to have mastered the fine art of fence sitting. Not having the gumption to actually make any form of decision that may come back to haunt them. Just adding my bit for what it is worth as a 60's-er. Am beginning to feel that perhaps I have been rather ostrich like to the current potential world situation, it doesn't bear thinking about, so I don't. Not that I think those with the power know best, but that there isn't much I can do to change things so I might aswell get on with my life and trust that common sense will prevail. What I do feel sure about is that this situation is commercially based and that the so called leaders are themselves being manipulated by faceless people...As for Sabbies suggestion that Charlie should be given a chance, so far he seems to be the only one who is applying any reason to his approach. It would be very interesting to hear other opinions, Loveday

One cannot fail but to fully endorse Richard's comments about the coming catastrophe in the middle east and its spin-off for all of us but imperialism has reared its ugly head again. Would love to believe that Blair, on this side of the pond anyway, would pull back but his belief is almost evangelical on this. The caveat he repeats mantra-like (his texan buddy doesn't)is there for all to see for its shallowness but the he, at least, must go through the motions of a 2nd UN resolution and try to appease those of us in the party. Ignominy, hopefully will follow him personally but unfortunately it'll affect the wider party but there's scant relief on the horizon that IDS and his loons are a better alternative for future governance. Who knows, Charlie might be a lucky recipient next time round. Anyway, will visit site suggested by Richard but it's hard not to be cynic in these times. On the other matter, Paul (" lurker ") Drawmer, good to see your note, great pity that you didn't make it then you'd certainly see the other lurker, Pils, at Walden in September. Sabbie

I'm hoping you can join me on an emergency petition from citizens around the world to the U.N. Security Council. The petition's going to be delivered to the 15 member states of the Security Council on THURSDAY, MARCH 6. If hundreds of thousands of us sign, it could be an enormously important and powerful message -- people from all over the world joining in a single call for a peaceful solution. But we really need everyone who agrees to sign up today. You can do so easily and quickly at: http://www.moveon.org/emergency/ The stakes couldn't really be much higher. A war with Iraq could kill tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and inflame the Middle East. According to current plans, it would require an American occupation of the country for years to come. And it could escalate in ways that are horrifying to imagine. We can stop this tragedy from unfolding. But we need to speak together, and we need to do so now. Let's show the Security Council what world citizens think. Thank you, Richard

For all of you who may visit this site but who haven't been back to the school - when the occasion arises in the future make the effort to attend - it's BRILL. Just a note of support for Richard Joynes's impassioned plea below. At FSSW in the 60s I remember leaflets on the main school noticeboard in the corridor outside the library for CND, Amnesty International and VSO - and am still grateful to my Quaker education for the humanitarian values it taught us.

"The Quaker way implies non-violence in thought, word and deed. The great majority of Quakers refuse to fight in war, and make clear their opposition to all preparations for it. The Society of Friends is regarded as one of the traditional 'peace churches'. " (Source: "The Quaker Way" leaflet issued by the Quaker Home Service 1985).

The ICM poll issued today claims that 90% of Britons are opposed to military action without a fresh UN mandate. Fifty percent are opposed to UK involvement under any circumstances.

At risk of boring or annoying Old Scholars who believe attacking Iraq now will increase our global peace and security in the long term, I've made a link page for the rest of us to stuff like The Daily Mirror' petition, this Saturday's march and other possibilities for positive peace action. (Just click on the web address in the header of this message.) If anyone else from FSSW who's going on the march wants to get in touch and hook up just give me a bell on the day - temporary mobile number: 0981-797-2984

Regarding the march this Saturday - unfortunately it looks as if nothing is going to stop Bush at this point but he may, just may, pause if Tony Blair backs away (or better yet, comes out against military action now). Despite Blair's statements to the contrary, it is clear overe here that he is serving one purpose and one purpose only and that is to give Bush domestic political cover. The majority of Americans are still against going in alone and Britain provide the capital "C" in "Coalition". Do most Britains realise that their sons and daughters will be dying solely to satisfy Bush's poltical survival in the 2004 elections? I beg you all to descend on Hyde Park this Saturday - it is our only hope.

Thanks for the inscribed menu with addresses in everyone's still-so-familiar handwriting. Jo, the meal you organised on Saturday night was excellent. The photos came out well. Thought: don't you think it's odd that despite being a "progressive" co-educational school, we only ever knew the boys by their surnames? Another thing - look at the school Panora photos. Which pupils look the, how shall I put it, most informal? Not the laid-back 1960s, as you'd imagine. Try 1948. Hope you all remain as well as you looked in September. Love to you all,Anne

If my memory serves me correctly the Bradbury family lived in Thaxted as did Malcolm's parents. I do hope you manage to make contact with some of them. With best wishes Loveday.

This is for Daisy Graham, whose hello to me on this page was very touching! Thanks very much Daisy - good to know you're well too. Sorry I didn't make it, everything just got a bit hectic. Or to put it another way very poorly organised. I would definitely be up for an 88 reunion - I partly suspected that The Mother of All Reunions would rather swamp any class-specific stuff. No doubt wrong about that too. Now what are these stories you've been hearing? I'm a good boy me. Take care and maybe see you one day not too far off... Mikex

Here's one for the oldies - 3 motets were written by Edmund Rubra for the 250th do - I was very sad to learn form Roger Bush that these have been "lost". Surely someone can help? Also, the small choir made ('cut?') a record (small EP) of Christmas carols - I think around Christmas 1955 or 1956. Roger says there isnt a copy of this in the archives - I thought I had a copy, but no luck. Has anyone else?

Tessa - and year of 1970 - I also decided to go on the march, and in so doing missed seeing quite a few people I would dearly loved to have seen, or seen a lot more of since I arrived Sat evening when some had been and gone or were just leaving. And, yes, the march did seem to be the right thing to do at the time. Tom Robinson - great to meet you at last and march with you. So very happy you came up on Sunday. Guts and humility. What a combo; what a guy! So sorry I missed some 1970ers! And Jo, Lee, Helen and Myra - you were just leaving - just time to see that no way you need a facelift Jo. What nonsense were you talking about - you look like you just stepped out of class! And Hank and Duncan - but a few moments to say hello and goodbye! So much to ask and talk about and no time. Reading the correspondence concerning the linl to the march I feel I should write. When I was a teacher at FSSW I tried to uphold Quaker ideals and openly stood up in assemblies to support these. One week was based on 'Why I am a Quaker'and the Sport Aid and other fundraising events were a way of putting this into practice. (For those who took part, do you remember we raised over £1700 for Sport Aid and well over £1000 for the Princes Trust with the swim) Anyhow, why I wasn't at the reunion on the Saturday as I had originally planned to be was because I was on the march. It seemed the right place to be at that time. I came up on Sunday and saw too few of you but still feel as a Quaker I did the right thing on Saturday. Nigel, You wrote to ask about including Quaker linked subjects; quite a few of the Old scholars I've kept in touch with may not be Friends but were influenced by Friends when at school and are sympathetic to Friends ideals. Since sept 11th there has been a huge increase in Attenders at Meetings; we should promote the work of Friends to find a non-violent solution to the situation with Iraq maybe even putting the Meeting for Sufferings statement as a link. If a Friends School web-site can't, then can it truly be calling itself Friends with a capital 'F'? For those I didn't see, many apologies but hopefully I will see you next time when the world is a more settled place.

Thanks Richard. Does anyone else recall BBC coming to FSSW in 1964 ? You may be thinking of the 8mm film of the school my brother Matthew Robinson made off his own bat (and at his own expense) at the end of the summer term in 1963 when he was in form 6/3. Matthew had this school movie remastered a few years back and VHS copies were indeed made available in the 90s. He's also written an interesting account of the making of the film - the school authorities at the time were ambivalent about it going ahead to say the least. You can email Matthew direct via the class lists (Year Group 1962)

Strange how memory works. e.g. the road to Saffron Walden has become unknown and passes through new landscape, yet it leads to a familiar place. The faces of old classmates are like algorhythms waiting to be kick-started. When the light and the angle co-operate to smooth out wrinkled sagging skin, you connect a youthful icon to a punched-out looking person standing blankly before you. Strange how quickly we home in on our roles of 35 years ago, jostling for position and re-forming 3rd form pecking discipline. So on the face of it things don’t change much. Though deeper inspection suggests that it’s the frame that remains the same, and the picture contained in it that is hopefully a richer shade…or maybe just faded out. Are we meeting new persona that occupy familiar forms? If so, then memory has very little to do with it. More, it’s a matter of whether the present version of the individual still strikes a chord. More next week….

Meeting those who were on the march helped remind me of the need for renewed personal political commitment. It has taken me a week to digest the import of the reunion for me and realise how lucky I was to have spent my formative teens in such a place and with such strong, good people. It was my first time back to FSSW since the day I left so long ago and I had very mixed emotions going into the week end. By Sunday I was floating on a high of positive feelings. Thank you Tom and all the other organizers for making it all possible. Having left the school before reaching O levels I had wondered where I fitted in, was I really part of the group. My fears were unfounded and I thank John for encouraging me to to be there, to Libby for making it easy to talk, to Mollie, Martin W., Di, Greg, Chris, and the beautiful Jill for remembering me, welcoming me back, sharing some precious memories and a long, lingering evening of conversation on the Saterday. And thank you Sabbie for telling me things I did not know about myself. I can not find the words to describe how much it has lifted my spirit. I love you all.

Dear Tom, and everyone else who organised such a great weekend - thank you for all your efforts - I really appreciated it. Unfortunately I didn't make it to FSSW until Saturday pm, and reading the messages I see that some of my classmates were only there on Saturday and I missed them. However I really enjoyed the Lost Souls concert ( I would of course ) My brother Paul and his friends introduced me to live rock and roll, and via the apprenticeship of being their roadie in the late 60s I went on to start my own company designing and manufacturing lighting systems for bands, discos, theatres and other performing arts. Although barn dancing is not my particular cup of tea - the idea of the tent in the sports centre was reaaly good, and if the school will allow it in future it seems a really good venue for OS get-togethers in the future. One other thing that really sticks in my mind - Pool Tables and Vending machines in the Boys Playroom - amazing - not a tuckbox in sight - but what happened to all the cockroaches, I suppose they must have died of starvation. I was also pleased to find, that despite the construction of all the new sports buildings, the door leading from the boys loos in the changing rooms to what used to be the 3rd Football Pitch (Now occupied by the Sports Hall) For non games enthusiasts, like me this was a welcome and well used escape root from a cold wet Wednesday afternoon on the pitch back to the warmth and comfort of the changing rooms. Sorry I didn't have longer to chat with you Stuart ( Palmer ) - However I have noted your comment about uncommunicative 62 ers and I'll be in touch. Thanks again for a great weekend, Iain Price - Smith

Before anyone thinks that I was laying claim to any moral high ground with my posting about Quaker principles...I should make it clear that I never had much success being a "good Quaker" or a "good Student." But my own failures never stopped me from admiring those who managed it. In that regard, I'd like to offer a belated but heartfelt thank you to Iowerth(sp?) John, who was one of the few members of staff at FSSW who looked you in the eyes when he talked with you, recognised when things were not going well, and listened without being judgemental. He was a true mentor. Hope you all had fun at the celebration.

Oh good grief. It seems as if things never change at this school. I spent five years at Walden wondering how the length of my hair affected my ability to be a "good" Quaker or a "good" student. I (almost) remember a poem that a student named Tanya Fox wrote in the Avenue: "I came to this school for the culture, To find out what life is about, to drink from that cup, with knowledge filled up, And I did... And they're chucking me out." Once again there seems to be a catastrophic failure on the part of people connected with this school to understand the it is founded on Quaker principles - and one of those fundamental principles is pacifism. Sorry if that makes life difficult for some people, but that is the case. My Dad would have one thing, and one thing only, to say to Tom Robinson and those who supported his stance against all wars: God bless you.

Many thanks Tom & all who collaborated to bring us together last weekend - though by mid-Sunday I was close to leaving as the game of saying "Ohh, you look familiar but who are you?" got ever more tedious - 'cos we never seemed to get much further than fitting name to face & recalling a few notorious &/or memorable events. Thankfully I stayed long enough to enjoy drinks with Patsy & Sara, Desmond & Tom; to see Steve's photo album; to hear of Duncan's trip to Ethiopia 20 years before I got there; thank Sabi for remembered me from the school film; to meet Hank Adams (sorry if we all associate you so much with your head shaving stunt but, hell, the game with a piece of rabbit fur as a toupe to placate the history teacher was priceless - and thanks for pointing out the rainbow) & spend a great evening with Robert & David to find out about what they've been up to since Walden & tell my tale of near kidnap in Somaliland in '94. Belated love & many kisses to she who told me she'd had a crush on me & recalled it all these years later!! Throughout the weekend, & since, I've thought of ex-class mates who probably had a lousy time 'cos they were excluded from the 'in' crowd, were bullied or otherwise not befriended & therefore would not want to attend a reunion (& probably won't even look at this message board). My wish is they've been strong enough to rebel against those traumas & are now happy. For me, good people (in my & other classes) looked out for & befriended me & I was not bullied (why should such behaviour have ever appeared in a Friends school?) but those 7 years lodged such a powerful coping mechanism & independence that deep relationships continue to elude me. I'm still working on my demons, as one OS called them, one of which is the phrase "Can't see the wood for the trees" being comment on an essay (Still working on the meaning!!) - but Fred Sessa talking of the military-industrial complex during 'liberal studies' is remembered more favourably & less hurtfully - & very apposite for present power games. Stay well, all of you. Robin.

I would also like to mention that I have had an email from a friend in the states saying that I mentioned I had kissed her whilst at school, this is not the case, I mentioned a certain bet I had with a certain teacher about kissing her but I lost the bet. I just wanted to set the record straight as it has now upset the girl in question as well as myself.

It was a great joy for me to become President on such a joyous occasion as last weekend's Reunion. It was truly wonderful. Many thanks to Andy Waters, Martin Hugall and the School for coping so admirably with the invasion. Thanks also to Nigel McTear and the Committee, many of whom worked themselves to a standstill to make things happen. Special mention must be made of Pam Tracy (Membership Secretary) who worked non-stop virtually the whole two days. And thanks to dear Tom who takes well-earned retirement, leaving us with a superlative website which gets through to those members which other forms of communication cannot reach and at far less cost! You will be pleased to hear that Angela Newman (now Whitehead, 1942-44), who collapsed and was rushed to Addenbrooks Hospital, is absolutely fine. She was overcome by the heat and the excitement. She and her sister, Jane (Woolman) thank all those who helped them. This is an exciting time in our history. Let's look forward to the next milestone in the School's development. May we all move forward with friendship, understanding and peace – for us and people all over the world. In friendship Hilary

Whilst browsing newsgroups, I found this...

'Small beer' is what is listed in the accounts of Friends' School(Saffron Walden, Essex)as the scholars' breakfast drink in the late 18th century.

("Small beer -- Beer made from a second lautering of the malt in the breweries or by home brewers who would use molasses, wheat bran, corn, and other ingredients."

Shame this ´perk´ ended by the time I got there, what more motivation do you need to get to school on time!

Thanks Jill (still can't believe it - am impressed with your blossoming IT skills)+ Laurie (honorary member!) Ian and John (safe journeys back to Canada) and Mollie (glad to have survived being a "day brat")for the send off. I am still walking around with a silly grin on my face thinking about all the stories we were remembering. Amazing how all the feelings and hidden memories shot up to the surface during the day - especially when some of strayed "out of bounds". Pity Mike couldn't have been there - and yes I am the one with the twin brother who got his head kicked instead of a football - I think his hair was the same colour as the football at the time - a sort of muddy brown. Talking of hair colour - sorry about the seemingly dramatic change from black to blondish - but age and the hairdresser saw to that. Thanks to all for a great time - and its good also to see a lively debate going on this messageboard. I'm also dead impressed by the speed of posting the photos of the pageant on the website. Thanks to those involved.

Nigel, I got so worked up about Tom I realise I didn't give you and the other organisers any credit for all your work as well. Anyway, thank you - between you all you've transformed the OSA. Not to beat a dead horse though, I'm interested to learn that Tom did, in fact, get permission for the link (since this seemed the only criticism I heard on Saturday. I used the link because I was one of thos who wanted to try and do both and, apart from using the organizers, poster, I did not feel I was being encouraged to participate or being preached to. I certainly didn't think a political statement was being made and endorsed by the OSA. As to wider objectives, I think the OSA should probably stick to what it is doing. Personaly, I think the message board should be open to any communication between OS. I find it interesting to read the views of people who have shared a common, formative experience and it helps us expats feel a little closer. If anyone wants to draw attention to an issue or a web site, they can mention it here. Similarly, those who feel like Giles Croucher should just skip on to the next message.

Peter your right Tom message is indeed an example to us all. Tom's contribution to the OSA is huge and has been since 1996. As one of the few people who can claim to have contributed as much (albeit in non web/internet ways)to the OSA I would like to thank Tom for everything he has done to help modernise the OSA and wish him every success in the future. We are and will remain mates and I know that our frirndship will last a lifetime. Had I not been away on business at the end of last week the link would have stayed and Tom would have retired from the OSA committee as he had always planned to. As a Quaker I share many of Tom's concerns but the OSA constitution states we are only there to promote Fellowship of Old Scholars and the School. Tom asked me if the link was OK a week or so before the "Best ever Reunion" and I said fine as long as we just provide a link to offer information and choice. Having never seen the link I dont know if it went further than this? One question I have is should the OSA look to add a wider objective of following Quaker principles. Given that most old scholars are not Quakers would this be a 'step too far'? Our constitution has served us well since 1894 but as Secretary I would welcome members views on this point. Both Tom & I care about the OSA more than most and its been a huge part of our lives for many years. Let's all work together to allow us to make weekends like last possible again.

Hey Giles C - re your last posting, not great news on MC Hammer alas: "The U.S. music channel VH1 has nailed the rights to the life story of hip-hop has-been Hammer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The biggest challenge facing the movie-makers is finding a lead actor who can dance like Hammer." Agree with Richard Joynes. Tom's most recent message should be an example to us all. I only rejoined OSA on Saturday after a break of 30-odd years and there would not have been an active Association if it had not been for a few dedicated people. Tom recognised that he over-reacted. Lets hope those who pulled the plug on the link do the same. Is it not over-reaction to over-reaction to over-reaction ad. infinitum (I stopped Latin after 1 year so it may be wrong) that can lead to war. I only got there on Saturday but it was a wonderful day. Thanks to all those involved in making it so successful.

Been reading "The School on the Hill". Very interesting. I see in the Concise Dictionary of National Biography that John Bellers, the "key name" of the founders of the school, devised schemes for the abolition of war. Interesting that we should celebrate 300 years on the weekend when a major demonstration to that end took place in London. Pity it didn't go through Clerkenwell!

Safely (?) back in New York I can reflect on a truly magnificent weekend that was both marred by the treatment, and then rescued by the actions, of Tom Robinson. I must be getting very naive in my old age, but I took the web site link to have been added to help OS solve the dilemma of wanting to go to the march and attend the reunion. The fact that the march was in keeping with well established quaker traditions of pacifism only makes the treatment of Tom all the more upsetting. There is no question in my mind that the turn out for both this and the 1996 reunion would have been miniscule without the incredible amount of work Tom has put in, especially on this web site. That is in addition to the other benefits of this message board in reuniting old friends and "laying ghosts" etc. I was incensed on Saturday when I heard of the treatment he had received from some committee mebers (who, themselves, had not acted in concert with the whole committee because several of the other members knew nothing about it on Saturday). However, Tom taught me a lesson in humility and forgiveness by showing up on Sunday and bringing a great weekend to a very moving conclusion on the front lawn on Sunday (without any sign, or mention, of the hurt he must have suffered during the previous 48 hours). I know I (and I suspect many others) wouldn't have been able to do that. Despite his willingness to put this behind him, as of Sunday afternoon he had received no apology from the committee members involved. I hope that, by now, they have learnt from Tom's example and apologized to him. If not, then I believe this matter should be fully discussed and the committee members involved expain their position more clearly. For those of us living overseas, this message board and the reunion website is the only effective forum of communication since, prior to Tom's involvement, we always received notice of meetings, reports etc several weeks after they had occured. Tom, I hope you realize that, whatever may have happened in the last week, there are many of us who are tremendously gratefull for all you have done over the last few years. As far as I'm concerned, YOU were the FSSWOSA. Richard

I would also like to thank Tom Robinson for creating this fantastic messageboard. Being relatively new to this technology I am finding the messages both compulsive and fascinating reading, and I agree that if nothing else this proves that we are all still capable of tolerating each other and having a lively debate. I do feel it will be a blow to the FSSWOSA though to lose Tom's input as he has, in my opinion, transformed our reunions. Meeting my friend, Libby, after 38 years was an amazing experience!! Dear All, Having read all the comments re Tom and the peace march I feel, although this forum is available to all those who wish to get in touch with old friends and possible chat about various subjects/ideals, that we should all say enough is enough. I come onto this forum regulary to see who has been on and I fond it irrating to say the least when I find nothing but protest, peace march and OSA grumbling on this site. It does not matter whether you are a quaker or not, it also does not mean that everyone else should feel that they ought to follow the herd. I was and still am a Unitarian way before I ever joined the school and through this have a neutral but intellectual view on most things that go on around me. Tom - your work is appreciated, but if you wish to discuss the misgivings/grievances that you may have experienced over the weekend dont you think you could do it elsewhere or actually talk to those who slighted you? The weekend was brilliant and I put to rest many unplesant ghosts that I have lived with ever since I left the school i.e I am moving on. You once came to the school and you chatted about your time at FSSW, you made me realise that many others did not have a nice time at the school, however perhaps for once you should listen to what you preach and move on as well. Life can be happier if you dont grumble as much. I remain a faithful OSA and look forward to seeing you all again soon. Regards Giles

Agree with Peter Mercer. If my message was dissmissive of the osa committee it was not intended to be - apologies. My experience of committees of this sort is that they are pretty stretched. Made up of volunteers who put in a lot of work while still holding down a job and running a family. Sometimes having to cope with stuff for which they are not personally trained and in these days of increasing legislation and litigation it is not surprising they have concerns and err on the side of caution. They must have put in a lot of work to put this reunion in place. And they did a good job, probably with scant help. If you have concerns, put them to the committee at the agm and hear what they have to say..... But hey isn't it good to know that the school tradition of spontaneous and rabid debate is still alive and well

Personally I couldn't care less whether there was a link to any peace movement or not - it all seems rather a storm in a teacup. But I do object to certain assumptions being made about OSA members (of which I am one) - so I would like to set a few points straight. Firstly, my Quaker education did not make me a pacifist. Secondly, it must therefore follow that pacifism has nothing to do with my being an OSA member. Finally, I would not like people to think the OSA represents my political views. I am proud to say, however, that Friends' School certainly taught me to be tolerant of others opposing views. For this reason I have nothing but admiration for Tom's heart felt messages and the fact he has the nerve to stand by his beliefs. Can't help but wonder one thing though: If 'anonymous' down below thinks of the USA leader as a despot, what does that make Saddam? Great weekend - well done everyone.

It was a good weekend but marred by the objections to the link to the Stop the War Coalition. Thanks Tom for all the work you did including the link. We were celebrating 300 years of a FRIENDS' School so it was quite appropriate to draw attention to a serious moral issue which has been a major aspect of Quakerism for all those years. To object is an insult to all those Friends who have worked for peace for so long, including the many OS who were conscientious objectors in two world wars. And why the anonanimity among OS writers to the message board - shame on you! You have my full support Tom and thanks for your link to the pictures at www.tomrobinson.com.

A small group of dedicated volunteers has run the Old Scholars' Association for years - despite massive indifference from many ex-pupils, and they deserve our warm thanks. Without the OSA this huge and highly emotional reunion could never have taken place.

OK, I had a disagreement with some of them last week, but to petulantly flounce out - all in the name of peace and reconciliation - was childish. I apologise for the ill-tempered tone of my last posting which was also a bit disingenuous.

Actually I was planning to stand down anyway this Autumn. World events have simply hastened my decision to leave now and devote my energies to more pressing matters. I'm glad so many people got so much out of the weekend. Also glad to have swallowed my pride and taken part in it on the Sunday. Out there in the wider world it's International Forgiveness Week. Like Luke says, let's put put all this behind us and move on.

The OSA is whatever its members want to make it. Since the weekend it's got 200 new members and a proactive new president in Hilary Halter. If you want things to change, then turn up and take part yourself. There's an AGM on November 22nd.

Incidentally if anyone's interested in seeing pictures from last Saturday's Peace March there's a link to them from http://www.tomrobinson.com

Warm wishes to all,

Tom Robinson

How does anyone else feel about anonymous postings on this message board.

We're all grown up now - what harm can possibly befall anyone for stating their opinions openly ?

Does anyone else share my unease about this ?

Just have to say how great it was to see everyone from '93 and the surrounding years on Saturday - had such a laugh seeing you all again. Hopefully we can all make the effort next year or something (or even something off our own backs?).

I had a great weekend. First time back in 25 years and it was spooky. However I am left with a sour taste after the treatment of Tom came to my attention afterwards. If the OSA can't allow a plug for peace on a web site connected to a Quaker school then maybe they should consider also removing the about-quakers link as well. As you know Quakers have regularly got into hot water for doing the right thing (and been labeled as political by people who don't like what they say). So was I political by going to CAAT meetings at Quaker summer school or my mother to Greenham in the 70's ? Lets get this sorted out or I for one will not be renewing my OSA membership. Give Tom the apology he deserves.

What is all this debate about what the message board is there for? It's there for messages pure and simple. Political messages, reminiseneces, declarations of love or hate, whatever. The only criticism that can be made against Tom is that he should have put the links within a message. I haven't a clue how many people comprise the committee but given the nature of committees it is almost inevitable that someone on the committee will have reservations about any one thing of a potentially controversial nature that the committee seems to be nailing its flag to. Thats the way committees are. I have no problem with the link though I am not in sympathy with the march. Don't like war. Dont like Saddam Hussein. His incursion into Kuwait had such obvious parallels with Hitler and Poland. My son was in the Gulf war and I didn't feel too happy about that but I felt what he was doing was as necessary as the resistance to Hitler's objectives. The trouble is that not enough work is done to build bridges between peoples during the peace. Tom did a great job with the web site. Hope he patches it up with the committee but it doesn't sound like he will.

Who said this message board is exclusively about keeping in touch with people and reminiscing?? This is an OSA message board and therefore I would have thought any opinion regarding the OSA would be appropriate here. As far as I can tell, everyone in this forum who has expressed concern at the link being removed attended the anti-war march on Saturday. Is this pro-active enough for you? Are you a memeber of the OSA committee by any chance?

Instead of all of you spending your time criticising Friends OSA for wanting the link removed (which at the end of the day - this message board is about keeping in touch with people and reminiscing - not really for voicing opinions on world affairs) why don't you all put your efforts where your mouth is, stop moaning, get off your backsides and do something about it. It's easy to sit in your chair, in front of your computer wingeing, but it takes a lot more to be proactive. Why can't we keep this message board lighthearted, just like it used to be?

Luke, ´putting to bed´ this issue is exactly NOT what we should do. Refusing to allow ´that link´ could give the impression that the OSA committee do in fact support the idea of killing Iraqi´s for the sake of Americas interests. Maybe they do. Maybe they have no Quaker values whatsoever... In any case, it seems to be a most acute example of hypocrisy, and unless a plausible explanation is provided by the committee all current OSA members with any respect for Quaker values and/or themselves should follow Tom´s example and resign.

WOW! What a bizzare weekend. Many faces recognised and names that, thought to have been lost, came bounding back in an instant. All the years I spent in misery at FSSW were washed away when hearing that there were many others who had just a harder time as myself. To the girls of 1993.....thanks for letting me hang with you guys...the walk across the field was freaky to say the least (No Chris Smith or Steve White) and the conversation about "posh" births will remain in my nightmares for a very long time! There are talks of further informal reunions being planned towards christmas time, if there any in London/SF do let me know and I shall be there! Stay in touch one and all..regards Giles (07732 398 281)

Well it's all over now and better put to bed, but I really cannot credit those who objected to this site publicising, in its small way, last Saturday's antiWar rally... what about non-violence and justice... some of the cornerstones that have anchored me to the Quaker movement... It's a great shame we now seem to have lost this site's architect and creator, Tom Robinson. Without him, the tercentenary would have proved a far more modest affair and the OSA's coffers would not be as brimming as they now are... All praise to you, Tom... and I hope all old scholars will echo that.... As for the reunion, well c'etait magnifique... well done to all who organised it...

What a surreal weekend! Fantastic to see so many old faces, some more recognisable than others! Everyone seemed to be in agreement that making the effort to attend had been worth it, and it is was great that after a few drinks it was like we had never left. Consensus of opinion seemed to be that we should try and make an effort and get the year group to meet up so everyone can experience the freak factor of seeing people you haven't seen for over 10 years! Suggestion was to organise something in London, perhaps in the new year, so any ideas? (E-mail address above!). Great to see those who attended again, things never really change do they!? Hi to all from 91, special congratulations to Catherine and Tom!. Hope to hear from some of you soon. Have fun - Phil

My comment re 'spineless maybe' reads as if I am suggesting that you may be. OF COURSE THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT. I was meaning to suggest that your committee colleagues may have been spineless. I do apologise for the misunderstanding this may have caused. I couldn't believe their stand. And lets hope yours, and those others that went to the march have had greater effect than thiose that didn't.

Hello Tom, We have had minimal communication about 2 years ago re mine (and yours) awful days at fsswosa. Out of a sense of morbid curiosity I look at it every now and again, and recently I saw the correspondence re the anti war march. I became incensed at the apparent priorities people were demonstrating. Over such an essential and huge issue I was astonished to see so much ambivalence to the march by a group of Quakers. It made me feel a kind of cynical resentment to those formative days. Hearing that the link was removed endorsed that. It is a sad reflection on society that the hunting lobby can get so many to demonstrate their desire to maintain their enjoyment of killing foxes, but when it is about pounding a country and its inhabitants with smart bombs, cluster bombs, exocets and what ever else - a booze up with the old boys is more important. I didn't like the selfishness I was reading. Yes, I agree with you that some have been planning the reunion day for 2 years, but in my books objecting to the crazed antics of some despot leader in the uSA is worth protesting against. Some may say a march is a worthless event - but some thing is certainly better than nothing. I admire your stand against the fssw osa committee and the wet response you got from them. Spine-less maybe? I respect and admire people of good humanitarian principle and moral standing and I really feel you have demonstrated that in your response to Simon Colbeck. Congratulations. Now I only feel sorrow for you that after all your hard efforts that you have suffered a 'kick in the guts'. Sincerly Tom, WELL DONE! IMPRESSIVE And those amongst you who know who you are sleep well tonight and I hope you don't wake up with back ache!!! CHEERS

What a blast that was. It was great seeing you all again after all these years. It was great meeting you again Danny Hills. You haven't changed a bit. I know you denied it but I'll swear it was you who, all those years ago, told me that story about Basher Jacobs in 3rd year boys prep. I know it was you and I know you made it up because a brassiere just doesn't have the correct aerodynamic properties for what you suggested. Pity I missed Johnnie Hartstone he still owes me fourpence for an ice cream. Great bumping into John Cadman but why was he carrying his hockey stick upside down? And what about John Evans? Suddenly he was there with the battered old leather briefcase that he used to carry into class "I think its time I returned these to you". He rummaged around and produced essays that we had all written forty years ago. I couldn't believe it. There among them was a couple of pages in my untidy scrawl, crossings out and blotches. I seemed to remember being told "Lamb, it would be more legible and probably make more sense if you dipped an arthritic spider in ink and allowed it to crawl across the page". The essay was my usual minimalist offering and I fully expected to see "If you must plagiarise at least choose a decent book to copy from" written at the bottom. Thanks John, you made my day. It was good to see you again and looking well. And it was good to catch Tom Johnston and his cronies having a smoke where the bike sheds used to be. Things just don't change at Saffron Walden. I had to look down at one point to check that I hadn't got short pants on all over again. Even the digs I had found had an old Wurlitzer juke box in the front hall and fifties memorabilia all over the place. In fact my first sight of an old scholar was when I arrived at the digs and there was Sabi Rawana stood outside staring at the locked door and wondering how to break in. So no changes there then. And Tony Newton, wasn't he Harry in those days? Or was that his brother Bryan? Well I know what I mean, I think. And did John Bradbury land his helicopter on the field? I didn't see it. I think this flying is all a figment of his fevered imagination. I bet he hasn't even got a common or garden DVLA driving licence. I have, the police have just returned it.

To Tom Robinson Many thanks for an excellent reunion weekend. Obviously a lot of work went into the organisation of the weekend, contacting people, etc. There was something to suit everybody, you even managed to arrange glorious weather, which made camping even more comfortable. Please pass on a big thank you to everyone involved in the arrangements.

I was disgusted. Quite frankly, standards are falling. In my day, if I had been seen by staff stumbling drunkenly round the field, I would have had been grounded for at least a week. In fact, I was. I was also cheeky to several staff members. No puni. No lines. I wasn't even gated. Outrageous. Hello to all my lot from 91, sorry to anyone who's name I forgot. I'm getting old.
